Since the recording of the information which are effective for the retrieval of the recording information of the magnetic tape is concentrated to the index area B, the outline of recorded contents can be recognized in a short time. The information to be effective for the retrieval are, for example, one representative picture at every a series of picture information, recording position information, a reference number, an index title, a comment, a date and a time, etc. These information are copied from the recording position of a cut to the heading index area at a time point to be recorded to the magnetic tape more than a certain extent. Thus, high-grade retrieving ability can be given.
