Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain high capacitance, low internal resistance and excellent durability by using an activated carbon body having a meshy structure having communicating pores as a polarizable electrode. CONSTITUTION:Activated carbon bodies being acquired by carbonizing and activating a polyvinyl acetal/phenol resin group porous body having communication porosity of at least 50% and having a specific surface area of 800m<2>/g or more are employed as polarizable electrodes 1, 1', and oppositely faced mutually through a separator 2 impregnated with an electrolytic solution. The activated carbon body having the meshy structure has the large specific surface area, and the specific surface area can be utilized effectively even when the activated carbon body is used as the electrode. Since the electrodes and the separator are unified, electric resistance is reduced, the title capacitor can also be miniaturized by mixing a conductive substance, and mechanical strength is also increased. Accordingly, the electric double layer capacitor having high capacitance, low internal resistance and excellent durability is acquired.
