Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a varistor which assures excellent nonlinearity, least aging characteristic and high stability by reducing phase change by heat of Bi2O3 phase forming a grain boundary segregation part through creation of bismuth compound which is stable against heat in the grain boundary segregation part of crystal grain which is mainly composed of zinc oxide forming a sintered material. CONSTITUTION:A kind of calcium, barium and strontium is included as a metallic additive to the raw material including zinc oxide and magnesium oxide as main elements and bismuth and tantalum as sub-elements. A pyrochlore type compound combining bismuth of 50% among a total amount in the sintered material is included in the grain boundary segregation part of crystal grain in the sintered material including bismuth of 0.05-1.0mol% in terms of Bi2O3 with the relationship between the metallic additive and bismuth and between tantalum and bismuth in the range of Me/Bi=0.05-0.5, Ta/Bi=0.2-2.0. According to the varistor of such constitution, it may be formed as the thermally stable substance, the V-I characteristic is less lowered in the low current region and excellent nonlinear characteristics can be obtained.
