Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve coupling efficiency by diagonally cutting the front end of a tapered part formed to an optical fiber, finishing the cut surface to a specular face and providing a lens which condenses the propagated light reflected on the specular face integrally to the tapered part. CONSTITUTION:The optical fiber 1 is converged to form the tapered part 2 and the front end of this tapered part 2 is cut diagonally. The cut face is finished to the specular face. The lens 4 which condenses the propagated light reflected by the specular face 3 is provided integrally to the tapered part 2 and the photodetecting surface of the photodetecting element 5 is disposed to face the lens 4, by which this structure is constituted. The radius of curvature of the lens 4 is, therefore, decreased to the radius smaller than the radius of the optical fiber 1 and the limitation of the condensing effect of the lens is eliminated. The coupling efficiency is thereby improved.
