Abstract

PURPOSE:To correct irregularity in sensitivity and shading, and to emphasize an image with simple constitution by generating driving signals that respectively modulate the integrating time of picture elements of an image pickup element. CONSTITUTION:The image pickup element 4 is driven by a driving signal from a timing pulse generating circuit 12. The circuit 12 modulates the pulse width of said driving signal for each picture element corresponding to the output level of the image pickup element 4, the sensitivity irregularity characteristic, and the shading characteristic of a light source 1, as well as modifying the driving-pulse width for each picture element independently in read or clearing cycle of the image pickup element 4 in order to modulate the charge integrating period of each picture element of the image pickup element 4. Also, the driving- pulse width for each picture element is independently modulated corresponding to the difference between neighboring integrating times in read or the clearing cycle of the image pickup element 4.
