Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve workability and safety and to obviate an increase in connection loss and the deterioration of strength by selecting the material of plastic clad layers so that the fusion connection of optical fiber can be executed without removing the core plastic clad layers of the optical fibers. CONSTITUTION:The plastic clad optical fiber which has a core 1 consisting of quartz and the plastic clad layer 2 consisting of a fluorine-contg. resin and having <=10% residue of thermal decomposition by thermogravimetry is selected. Protective layers 4 and buffer layers 3 of the optical fibers are removed and while the plastic clad layers 2 are held coated on the cores 1, the fusion connecting parts of the optical fibers are butted and heated. The need for removing the plastic clad layers 2 is thereby eliminated and the workability is improved. Since heat and solvents are not used, there is no danger in the operation and since the core surfaces are not flawed, the connection loss is not increased and the strength is not increased as well.
