Abstract

PURPOSE:To positively detect the presence or absence of a liquid adhered to a light permeable shield, by providing a plurality of light emitting elements, an image sensor and a signal processing part, etc. CONSTITUTION:A plurality of light emitting elements 22a and 22b divided into a pair of groups are fitted at an end portion 21a of an opening of a casing 21, with their light emitting surfaces directed towards, for example, the wiping area of a windshield 10. When rain drops are adhered partly on the outer surface of the shield 10, a part of light from the light emitting elements 22a which irradiate the area of the shield 10 where the rain drops are adhered is hardly totally-reflected, and therefore the reflected light hardly reaches an image sensor 26. On the other hand, when there are formed dew drops or cloudy part partly on the inner surface of the shield 10, a part of the light from the light emitting elements 22b irradiating the dim area of the shield is scattered or passes through the shield, and hardly reaches the image sensor 26. A signal processing unit 30 judges the falling condition of rain and the dimness of the windshield on the basis of the outputs from the image sensor 26, thereby to control the operation of a wiper and an air conditioner.
