Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve access processing efficiency and reliability by storing all positional information relating to a bad spot in a CE (maintenance) area on a hard disk so as to read out the information and initializing a hard disk while avoiding the bad spot. CONSTITUTION:Bad spot position information is written in a bad spot information buffer 10, the format processing of the hard disk 16 is executed by a disk initializing part 11 and then track substituting processing is executed by a track substitutive part 12 on the basis of data in the buffer 10. Then, the data in the buffer 10 are written in a CE area bad spot of the hard disk 16 by a CE area bad spot writing part 13 to end the format processing. Thereby, bad spots included in the current hard disk can be completely avoided. Consequently, the positions of the bad spots generated in the past can be instantaneously detected and the reliability of the hard disk can be improved.
