Abstract

PURPOSE:To ensure that faulty ejection of droplets does not occur even after the titled head is let to stand for a long time and enable the head to perform high-speed recording at a high repetitive driving frequency, by providing an orifice with a movable member which opens the orifice at the time of ejecting a recording liquid and closes the orifice at non-ejecting times. CONSTITUTION:A recording liquid is introduced into a liquid chamber 6 through a liquid-supplying pipe 8, and is fed through a nozzle 1 to an orifice 2. When the recording liquid is not to be ejected, the orifice 2 is closed by a movable valve 3, so that the recording liquid 10 is not exposed directly to the outside air, and since the liquid 10 is held in contact with the valve 3, the liquid surface is not retracted. When energization for heating is stopped, defoaming in the nozzle 1 is started, and the valve 3 is automatically closed by a pressure drop due to contraction of a bubble 11, resulting in that a droplet 12 is formed. Simultaneously, the recording liquid in the nozzle 1 moves forward, followed by a supply of the recording liquid through the pipe 8 and the chamber 6, whereby an ejecting operation is completed. Accordingly, retraction of the recording liquid is substantially prohibited by the action of the valve 3, and the ejection can be repeated at a high speed.

The recording liquid used when recording with such an inkjet recording device generally consists of a recording agent such as a pigment or dye, and a medium for dissolving or dispersing it, mainly water, or water and a water-soluble organic solvent, or water and a water-soluble organic solvent. It is formed by a non-aqueous solvent and a solvent component consisting of a non-aqueous solvent. In an inkjet recording device, an orifice provided at the tip of a nozzle through which recording liquid is ejected is often constantly open to the outside air of the device, regardless of whether or not the device is being driven. Therefore, when recording is not performed or for a long period of time, some of the solvent evaporates from the orifice into the outside air, and recording agent components and solvent components that are difficult to volatilize remain in the recording liquid. The composition of the recording liquid stagnant in the nozzle portion changes and the viscosity increases, resulting in an increase in the viscous resistance of the nozzle portion. Therefore, immediately after restarting recording after the printing material has stopped, droplet ejection failure is likely to occur, in which droplets are not ejected even though the ejection signal is applied, and defects may occur in the initial printed area of the recorded image. There was a problem in that it caused

Furthermore, in order to repeatedly eject droplets with an inkjet recording apparatus, the amount of liquid lost during ejection must be replenished before the next ejection. A typical method for this purpose is to use the surface tension of the liquid to guide the liquid to an orifice by capillary action. In this case, the time t2 required to introduce the liquid to the orifice is
It is determined by t2=d/u. However, d is the distance that the liquid remaining in the nozzle retreated from its original position after the droplet was cut, and U is the moving speed of the liquid due to capillary action. The above-mentioned time t2 is usually much larger than the time E required for a droplet to form, and the repeatable driving frequency f, which is determined by f = 1/l + t, is, in fact, limited by t1°. However, no matter how quickly the droplets form,
There was a problem in that the repeat drive frequency could not be increased.

At this time, in a conventional inkjet recording head that does not have a movable valve 3, the orifice 2 is open even when recording liquid is not being ejected, causing evaporation of liquid components that cause ejection failure. Furthermore, due to the surface tension of the recording liquid, the liquid surface formed by the recording liquid and the orifice 2 recedes in a U-shape toward the nozzle 1, as shown in FIG. 3(b), which will be described later. It is held in orifice 2.

On the other hand, in the case of this example having the movable valve 3, when the recording liquid is not ejected, the orifice 2 is sealed by the movable valve 3, as shown in FIG. The recording liquid 10 does not come into direct contact with the outside air, and components in the liquid do not evaporate into the atmosphere. Furthermore, since the recording liquid 10 is held in contact with the movable valve 3, the liquid level does not recede.

In this state, droplets are ejected from the orifice 2 to perform recording. The droplet is ejected by applying an ejection signal corresponding to the recording pattern to the electrode 5 and heating the electrothermal transducer 4 with electricity. This heating causes a bubbling phenomenon in the recording liquid in contact with the electrothermal converter 4 as shown in FIG.
It is discharged from. At this time, the movable valve 3 is automatically opened as shown in FIG. 2(b) due to the discharge pressure of the recording liquid, so that it does not interfere with the discharge of the recording liquid.

When the electrical heating is stopped, the bubbles inside the nozzle 1 begin to disappear.
Figure 2 (C) due to the pressure drop when the bubble 11 contracts.
The movable valve 3 automatically closes and a droplet 12 is formed as shown in FIG. At the same time, the recording liquid inside the nozzle 1 advances in the plane, and along with this, the recording liquid is replenished from the supply pipe 8 through the liquid chamber 6, and one discharge operation is completed, and the inside of the nozzle 1 is in the second position.
The state returns to the state shown in figure (a). At this time, if there is no movable valve 3, the liquid level will retreat as described above, and extra time (t2 = d/u) will be required to replenish the recording liquid in the next ejection operation. . However, in the case of this example having the movable valve 3, the receding distance @d of the recording liquid becomes almost 0 due to the action of the valve 3, and high-speed repeated discharge becomes possible.

The effect of the movable valve 3 can be clearly confirmed by observing the position where the bubble 11 disappears. A schematic diagram for explaining such a state is shown in FIG. FIG. 3 shows the nozzle part of the inkjet recording head viewed from 142. FIG. 3(a) shows the example shown in FIG. 1 with the movable valve 3, and FIG. 3(b) shows it for comparison. This is an observation sketch of the defoaming position of the conventional inkjet recording head that does not have the movable valve 3 shown in FIG. As shown in the position of the bubble 11 in FIG. 3, in the case of (b) without the movable valve 3, the recording liquid moves from the orifice 2 to the liquid chamber due to the pressure drop caused by the contraction of the bubble 11. 6, and the liquid level (meniscus) formed in the orifice 2 has receded significantly. On the other hand, it has a movable valve 3 (a
), the recording liquid moves from the liquid chamber 6 to the orifice 2 due to the pressure drop accompanying the contraction of the bubble 11.

Therefore, in the case of the present invention having a movable valve, it is possible to perform the next discharge immediately after the bubble disappears from the state shown in FIG. 3(a), and high-speed repeat recording can be performed. In the case of the conventional example without a movable valve, as shown in FIG. 3(b), it took a long time for the meniscus that had retreated significantly to return to the orifice, making it impossible to perform high-speed repetitive recording.

Although the movable valves are provided to cover the entire surface of the orifice on each side, it is not necessary to cover the entire surface of the orifice, and may be provided to cover only a portion thereof. Of course, the shape is not particularly limited, and may be any desired shape depending on the orifice shape. Further, in all of the above, the movable valve is made of rubber, but it may be made of other materials such as plastic or metal. Furthermore,
The movable valve may be integral with the orifice or nozzle component. FIG. 8 shows an example of such integration, in which the movable valve 3 is a rubber valve integrated with the nozzle wall 1. Furthermore, the opening and closing of the movable valve does not necessarily have to be done by a mechanical opening and closing mechanism that utilizes the discharge pressure of the recording liquid as described in ``-'', but may be automatically opened and closed by using electrical or magnetic means. . Of course, the movable member in the present invention is not limited to the movable valve as described in -, but may also be, for example, a sliding door equipped with an automatic sliding mechanism.

[Effects of the Invention] As explained above, according to the present invention, evaporation of the recording liquid during non-ejection is prevented, droplet ejection failure does not occur even after being left for a long time, and droplet discharge does not occur from the orifice during droplet ejection. It is now possible to provide a new inkjet recording head that prevents the liquid level from receding and enables high-speed recording at a high repetition rate.
