Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable mirror finishing of an end face to be carried out in a short time with high quality, by setting up the captioned device to hold the end face of a plastic optical fiber, while pressing it onto a flexible polishing tape which is forced to run between a pair of reel. CONSTITUTION:A flexible polishing tape 6 is mounted on a pair of reel 1, 2, that are installed on a base stand 5, capably of being driven in rotation. Further, a holding member 8 consisting of a shaft part 19 having an integrated stopper piece 17 possible to be fit in T-type groove formed on the base stand 5 and clamping ring 20 screwed round the shaft 19 is mounted on the base stand 5, and a plastic optical fiber 7 is held by this holding member 8. Furthermore, a pressing plate 10 is arranged on the side of the polishing tape 6 opposite to the side on which the optical fiber 7 is set, on the base stand. This plate is energized toward the optical fiber 7 along a long groove 12 by means of springs B each one end of which is fixed to a pin 5. Then, the end face of the optical fiber 7 is brought in contact with the polishing tape 6 to carry out mirror finishing through running motion of the tape 6.

BACKGROUND ART Traditionally, the end face of plastic optical fibers has been manually polished. In this polishing work, rough polishing is first performed to obtain a certain degree of flatness, and then final polishing is often performed. Therefore, the polishing depends largely on the operator who performs the polishing, resulting in variations in the finish and the problem that it takes a long time to obtain a good end surface.

With the plastic optical fiber 7 fixed by the holding member 8, the polishing tape 6 is run from the supply reel 1 to the take-up reel 2. The pressing plate 10 elastically presses the polishing tape 6 against the tip 9 of the plastic optical fiber 7 by means of a spring 13. As the polishing tape 60 runs, the tip 9 is polished and a mirror surface is finally formed.

When the surface of the polishing tape 6 is clogged with the plastic optical fibers 7, the locking piece 17 is moved along the guide groove 1fi to the side or F to adjust the contact position between the tip 9 and the polishing tape 6. The width of the polishing tape 6 can be displaced in the force direction. This allows the polishing tape 6 to be used without wasting it.Furthermore, the polishing tape 6 can be wound many times and used repeatedly. can.
