Abstract

PURPOSE:To measure accurately the actual running time of a marathon runner by reading a bar-code, which is formed on a reflective plate of an identifier which each runner puts on, with optical scanning and storing it in a memory in relation to a clock output. CONSTITUTION:An individual bar-code on a reflective plate 2 of an identifier 4 which a runner puts on is sweep-scanned by the laser luminous flux from a laser light source 10 in an optical device 9 provided at the start point and is read out optically. The read code due to a photoelectric converter 16 and a processing circuit 17 is used as an address to record the clock output from a clock signal generating circuit 18 in a memory 19. Similarly, the clock output at the goal is recorded in a memory 20, and the actual running time of each runner is calculated and measured accurately through a computer 21 on a basis of contents of memories 19 and 20.

In marathon events where there are a large number of participants, it takes several minutes from the start time until all runners cross the starting line. Due to the different times of the day, it was extremely difficult to accurately measure the actual running time of each runner.

Therefore, this invention was devised to solve these problems in marathon competitions, and is intended to place an optically readable identification tag with an identification number on each runner's shoulder or head. The start time is the time when each runner's identification number is read on the start line.
Furthermore, by setting the time read at the goal as the arrival time, the actual running time for each runner can be obtained from the time between the two times.

As shown in Figure 'A72, the valley thinner has a reflector plate (2) that reflects the incident light beam (1) in the direction of incidence, and a striped bar code is formed on the surface of this reflector plate (2). The person is made to wear an identification tag (4) made of a non-reflective surface (3). This striped barcode represents an identification number, and is different for each identification tag (4).
