Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare an optical fiber having a metallic coatig of uniform thickness, by using a preform prepared by covering the periphery of a rod consisting of a core containing quartz glass as a principal component and a clad containing quartz glass as a principal component with a metallic pipe and a quartz pipe.
CONSTITUTION: A preform is prepared by covering a core 1 of a high-refractive index glass containing quartz as a principal component with a clad 2 consisting of a low-refractive index glass containing quartz as a principal component. The resultant preform is then covered with a metallic pipe 3, e.g. Al, Cu, Au or Pt, and a quartz glass pipe 4. The resultant rod is then heated to a temperature near the melting point of the quartz to adhere the respective layers closely and remove the air contained between the layers completely. Te preform is softened by heat and spun into an optical fiber. Finally, the outer quartz pipe layer 4 is removed mechanically at a temperature of the melting point of the metal or below. The presence of the metallic coating layer on the optical fiber provides the improvement in strength, and an optical fiber usable even at a high temperature is prepared.
