Abstract
A method for propelling a wheel driven vehicle having a drive line with a prime mover or engine (10), an energy storage device or flywheel (16), a clutch (14) between the engine and the flywheel, and a continuously variable transmission unit (20) in which fuel consuming operation of the engine is restricted to not less than a predetermined minimum thermal efficiency when needed to develop power for the system. Developed power in excess of that required to propel the vehicle when so developed is stored as kinetic energy by increased flywheel speed resulting from the excess power operation of the engine to develop power above the predetermined minimum thermal efficiency may be on an idealized line of operation or may proceed to maximum power in conventional fashion.
