Abstract

PURPOSE: To simply obtain a coated optical fiber with high transmitting characteristics by coating the outside of an optical fiber with a coating material crosslinkable with ultraviolet rays and irradiating the material with ultraviolet rays.
CONSTITUTION: A naked optical fiber F1 immediately after spinning is introduced into the container 2 of the 1st coating apparatus 1 and dipped in a coating material A. The material A is molded in a prescribed thickness to form a primarily coated optical fiber F2. The fiber F2 is continuously introduced into the container 5 of the 2nd coating apparatus 4 and dipped in a coating material B crosslinkable with ultraviolet rays. When the fiber F2 leaves the container 5 through dies 6, the material B stuck to the outside of the fiber F2 is molded in a prescribed thickness to form a secondarily coated optical fiber F3. The fiber F3 leaving the container 5 is irradiated with ultraviolet rays from ultraviolet irradiators 7 to thoroughly crosslink the material B stuck to the fiber F3.
