PURPOSE:To obtain magnetic recording with specified density independently of number of channels, by changing the number of recording tracks per channel and the recording speed in accordance with the number of channels of a signal in PCM conversion and recorded in time division in parallel. CONSTITUTION:An input signal to a channel CH1 is converted at an A/D converter 15 and a gate circuit 16 and a PCM time division signal is written in memory circuits 17-24. Similarly, an input signal to a channel CH2 is written in memories 17'-24'. further, the PCM time division signal of each channel is recorded on a magnetic tape 41 respectively through heads 36 and 37, 38 and 39 via stereo time division changeover switches 28 and 28' and a monaural-stereo changeover switch 29.
