Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare erythropoietin useful as a remedy for the inveterate anemia of the patient of renal insufficiency, economically in an industrial scale, by implanting an erythropoietin-producing tumor to an immunodeficient animal, and separating the objective substance from the urine of the animal.
CONSTITUTION: An erythropoietin-producing tumor is implanted to an immunodeficient animal, e.g. a genetic thymoprival animal such as nude mouse, and the erythropoietin is separated from the urine of the animal. Erythropoietin is an important hormonelike substance which is produced or activated in the kindney, and acts to the stem cells existing in the hematopoietic organs to cause the differentiation of erythroblast cells and the acceleration of the production of erythrocytes. After the hypodermic implantation of the tumor cells to the above animal, the erythropoietin concentration in the urine of the animal having proliferated tumor cells is determined. When the increase in the amount of erythropoietin in the urine is observed, the urine is collected, and the erythropoietin is separated and purified by the combined use of dialysis, various chromatographic processes, etc.
