Abstract
PURPOSE:To eliminate the exhaust smoke of an engine at its starting, by providing the exhaust line of the engine with a carrier for adsorbing the exhaust smoke at the starting and by disposing of the adsorbed smoke ingredients by the heat of the engine warming up. CONSTITUTION:At the starting of an engine, water 3 acts as nuclei so that particles with oil 4, carbon 5 and so forth are adsorbed in the pores 2 of an adsorbing carrier 1. When the temperature of exhaust gas of the engine has become 250 deg.C or more due to its warming-up, the water 3 is evaporated and the oil 4, carbon 5 and so forth are disposed of. In order to cause these phenomena effectively, the adsorbing carrier 1 is located in the expanded part 6 of an exhaust pipe where the temperature of exhaust gas becomes 250 deg.C or more at the warming-up. The water absorption of the adsorbing carrier 1 is 35 to 45%. The carrier 1 is made of a material such as cordierite, silicon nitride and alumina, whose poer disribution has its central size around 5 to 7mu. The carrier 1 is caused to contain a catalyst such as platinum and palladium if necessary. The carrier 1 is shaped as a honeycomb, a pellet or the like.
