Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce the titled compound in high ratio as a by-product, without lowering the quality and yield of the main product, in the reaction of an alkanal with formaldehyde in the presence of an alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, by charging the raw materials under specific conditions.
CONSTITUTION: (A) Formaldehyde is made to react with (B) the compound of formulaI(R' is H or lower alkyl) in the presence of (C) an alkali metal hydroxide or an alkaline earth metal hydroxide to obtain the compound of formula II (R is methylol or R', especially methylol or ethyl). In the above reaction, the compound of formula III useful as a raw material of polyester can be obtained in high ratio, by charging 0W20%, especially 2W20% of the whole charging amount of C and 2W20% of the whole charging amount of A are charged to the reaction system in advance, feeding the residual amounts of A and C and the whole amount of B slowly to the reaction system in parallel keeping the molar ratios of A/B and C/B above the theoretical values, and reacting preferably at <50°C.
