Abstract

PURPOSE:To make the area of storage region small to obtain small sized image pickup element and to reduce deterioration in transfer efficiency, by corresponding two columns of charge transfer elements of the storage region to one column of those of image pickup region. CONSTITUTION:Corresponding to one column of charge transfer elements 9 of image pickup region inputting and storing signal charges by light, two columns of charge transfer elements 11 of storage region temporarily storing signal charge are provided. A selecting transfer gate region 10 is provided between the element 9 and 11, and a selecting readout transfer gate region 12 is provided between the elements 11 and a readout register region 4. A signal charge caused at light in the image pickup region is alternately transmitted to the two element columns 11 corresponding to each other in the region 10 from the element columns 9. The signal charge given to the elements 11 is read out at the region 12 in the order of transmission and given to the readout region 4.
