Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a high-performance cation exchange membrane, stable for a long period of time, by treating a cation exchange membrane consisting of a carboxylic acid group-containing perfluorocarbon polymer, with an organic solvent, and then forming a crosslinked structure in the membrane.
CONSTITUTION: A perfluorocarbon polymer containing a substituent of formula I [wherein n is 2W5; A is CN, COF, formula II, III or IV (when R1 is a 1W10C alkyl; R2 and R3 are H or R1; M is H, Na, K or NH4)], is molded into a membrane, and the sustituent of the formula I is partially converted into a substituent of formula V (wherein n is 2W5). After the membrane is swelled with an organic solvent (e.g., methanol) of water-solubility ≥0.1g/100g water at room temprature, the organic solvent is removed from the membrane. During or after the removal, the membrane is crosslinked by the coupling reaction of a substituent of the formula II, by use of UV, heat or a radical reaction initiator. A cation exchange membrane having excellent performance for a long period of time is obtained.
