Abstract

PURPOSE: A fluorescent substance of a specified composition with improved brightness, emitting green light by excitation by means of an electron beam and UV ray, which is prepared by partially substituting yttrium silicate with scandium followed by activation with terbium.
CONSTITUTION: A terbium-activated yttrium scandium silicate of formula Y2-x-y ScxTbySiO5 (wherein x=y/2W4 in molar ratio; y=0.12W0.18). The yttrium terbium silicate is obtd. by mixing finely powdered yttrium oxide, terbium oxide and silica and calcining the resulting mixture. at a temp ≥1,300°C in N2 atmosphere contg. about 5vol% hydrogen. Partial substitution of yttrium in the silicate with scandium improves brightness. About 0.12W0.17mol of terbium is usually introduced as an activator, and the brightness is increased by about 10% by calcination with addition of about one third of said amt. of scandium.
