Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover the titled compound useful as a remedy for renal anemia, by concentrating and adsorbing erythropoietin in normal human urine with an ultrafilter and a basic anion exchanger, and eluting the erythropoietin with an aqueous solvtion of a salt.
CONSTITUTION: Normal urine or waste urine containing erythropoietin after extraction of a physiologically active substance, e.g. urokinase, is, without pretreatment, concentrated by an ultrafilter having a fractionating molecular weight of preferably 30,000 or less to a volume of 1/5W1/50 the original one. The resulting concentrate is adjusted to an electric conductivity of 0.5W8mmho/cm and pH4W8, and then brought into contact with a buffered basic anion exchanger to adsorb the erythropoietin. The adsorbed erythropoietin is washed with a buffer solution, and eluted and recovered with an aqueous solution of a salt, e.g. NaCl.
