Abstract

PURPOSE:To detect the leakage of a low-temperature fluid by employing an optical fiber whose light-transmitting capability attenuates at low temperature. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber 1 as a sensor is made of a silicon 2 cladded silica glass core 3 and laid around a storing equipment for a liquid to be stored at low temperature. A light beam is applied to the optical fiber 1 from a light-emitting element 4, received by means of a light-receiving element 5, amplified by means of an amplifier 6 and compared with the preset value in a comparator 7. When it is less than the preset value, an alarm is sounded from an alarm device 8. At ordinary temperatures, the optical fiber 1 sufficiently transmits the light beam. However, when the ambient temperature of the laid position is lowered by that the low-temperature liquid having leaked contacts with the fiber 1 or vaporizes, the light- transmitting capability of the optical fiber 1 remarkably attenuates. Accordingly, an alarm is sounded from the alarm device 8.
