Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain improved carbon fibers, by spinning a pitch wherein meso phase and nonmeso phase exist nonuniformly while ultrasonic wave being irradiated to it.
CONSTITUTION: The pitch 1 wherein meso phase and nonmeso phase exist nonuniformly is extruded from the nozzle 4 while being irradiated by ultrasonic wave from the ultrasonic horn 2, and formed into fibrous shape, to give fibers which are wound by the bobbin 5. Those fibers, if necessary, are oxidized with air, etc. and made infusible, and calcined to give carbon fibers. The meso phase and the nonmeso phase are not dispersed completely by common stirring. The irradiation of ultrasonic wave makes the diameter of a dispersion phase small and makes almost uniform dispersion, so that the quality and the diameter of the fibers become uniform, to give carbon fibers having continuous strength and high modulus.
