Abstract

PURPOSE:To exercise effective tracking control by detecting the envelope of the carrier levels of an FM-modulated audio signal and by moving a reproducing head in the rising direction of the envelope and setting it at its peak position. CONSTITUTION:Information on magnetic tape 11 where a video signal and FM- modulated audio signal are recorded on the same recording track is read by head 20 and then passed through Y filter 27, color filter 28 and audio filter 29 to generate a video output and audio output. The FM audio signal from filter 29, after being supplied to envelope demodulating circuit 33, is supplied to peak detecting circuit 35 via A/D converter 34 to control pulse motor 25, thereby moving head 20 in the width direction of the track. Therefore, by using the FM audio signal an accurate tracking control is exercised without reference to characteristics of the tape, head, etc., so that the reproduction characteristics is stabilized.
