Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain easily a crystalline azo pigment having excellent electrophotographic characteristics such as sensitivity, repetition characteristics, by a method wherein a specified azo pigment obtd. from a hexazonium salt and a coupler such as Naphtol AS is treated with an org. solvent.
CONSTITUTION: A crude azo pigment of formula I [wherein A is a radical of formula II, III or IV (wherein X is (substd.) benzene, (substd.) naphthalene, (substd.) indole, etc.; Ar1 is (substd.) benzene, (substd.) naphthalene, (substd.) dibenzofuran, etc.; Ar2, Ar3 are (substd.) benzene, (substd.) naphthalene; R1, R2 are H, (substd.) lower alkyl. (substd.) phenyl; R3 is lower alkyl, carboxyl or ester thereof)] produced by using an org. solvent such as N,N-dimethyl-formamide as a reaction solvent, is washed with water, dried if necessary, and then treated with a desired org. solvent. The solvent is used in an amount of pref. at least 10 parts per part of the pigment. The effect can be enhanced by repeating the treatment several times. The pigment is treated with stirring at a temp. of room temp. to boiling point for 1W24hr. The pigment as a crystal is recovered by filtration.
