Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare an α-alkyl-5H-benzopyrano[ 2,2-b ]pyidine-7-acetic acid, having antipyretic, analgesic, and antipholgistic activities, easily, in high yield, from a novel corresponding 7-alkenyl compound.
CONSTITUTION: A novel compound, 7-alkenyl-5H-benzopyrano[2,3-b]pyridine of formula I (R is H or 1W3C alkyl; X is H2 or O) is made to react with CO in the presence of water or an alcohol of formula R'-OH (R' is 1W6C alkyl, etc.) to afford a compound of formula II, which is converted to a compound of formula III by eliminating the ester group or by reacting with a mixture of H2 and CO. Oxidation, etc. of the compound of formula III give the objective α-alkyl-5H-benzopyrano[2,3-b]pyridine-7-acetic acid of formula IV.
