NEW MATERIAL:2-Azetidione derivative of formula I [R1 H or acylamino; X is S or methylene; R2 is formula -ACOOR4 (A is alkylene; R4 is H or ester residue) or tetrazolyl; R3 is H or formula II (R5 is H or lower alkyl; R6 is H, lower alkyl, aryl, etc.); provided that R3 is H when R1 is acylamino and that R2 is tetrazolyl when X is S and both R1 and R3 are H] or its salt.
EXAMPLE: 1-Carboxymethyl-4-carbboxymethylthio-2-azetidinone.
USE: β-Lactamase inhibitor.
PROCESS: A compound of formula V (R7 is ester residue) is obtained by the reaction of, e.g. a compound of formula III and a derivative of α-ketocarboxylic acid of formula IV.
