Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the reverse osmosis composite membrane with excellent selective permeability, water permeability, chemical resistance, heat resistance, anti- bacterial property and the like by cross-linking with a specific compound a membrane mainly comprising hydroxystyrene type polymer on microporous support membrane. CONSTITUTION:On a microporous support membrane of which surface pore size is generally about 100-1000Angstrom , for example, polysulphone membrane, is coated a solution which dissolves a hydroxstyrene type polymer A of the formula I containing polyhydroxy unit (e.g. o-hydroxystyrene structural unit) in a concentration of at least 30mol% of the total repeating units and a compound (e.g. HCHO) capable of reacting with the structural portion of the formula II within the formula I at more than one functional portion. Then said polymer A is cross-linked by methods such as heat treatment and the like to prepare a selectively permeable composite membrane. The polymer A is one which dissolves in more than one medium selected from water and water-compatible organic solvents of boiling points below 120 deg.C (e.g. methanol) in a concentration of 0.1g/100c.c. or higher.
