Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound, in an extremely high yield, in a short time and in one step, by hydrolyzing β-phenylethyl bromide with an alkali salt and water in a specific solvent in the presence of a specific carboxylic acid salt.
CONSTITUTION: β-Phenylethyl bromide is hydrolyzed with an alkali metal salt and water in the presence of (A) an alkylene glycol or an alkylene glycol monomethyl ether (or a polyethylene glycol mono- or di-methyl ether) and (B) an alkali formate or an alkali γ-hydroxybutyrate. The reaction can be carried out in one step, in a sort reaction time, and in an remarkably improved yield.
EFFECT: The reaction can be carried out economically without using a specific reactor such as pressurized vessel, etc., only by recovering and reusing the solvent.
