Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover an organic acid in a reusable state from an aqueous solution containing the organic acid at a relatively low concentration, by extracting the organic acid with a petroleum hydrocarbon solvent containing an amine and a phosphoric acid ester, and removing the solvent by heating, etc.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution of an organic acid is made to contact with an organic solvent containing an extractant selected from a group of primary to quaternary amines and a group of phosphoric acid esters to extract the organic acid. The organic acid is recovered an the organic solvent is regenerated either by heating or distilling the solution or by contacting the solution with a liquid containing Na, Mg, NH3, etc. The recovered organic acid is mixed with H2SO4 or HCl, and made to contact with a solvent containing a phosphoric acid ester to extract the addition product of the organic acid and the phosphoric acid ester to the organic phase. The organic acid can be recovered from the addition product by distillation. The above process is suitable for the treatment of waste water containing about 50W0.1g/l of the organic acid.
