Abstract

PURPOSE: soft twists in a specific range and then heat treatment are applied to linearly oriented aromatic polyamide fibers, thus increasing the drawing ratio without yarn breaking and fluff formation and resulting in high Young's modulus.
CONSTITUTION: An optically anisotropic dope of a linearly oriented aromatic polyamide, preferably poly-p-phenylene terephthalamide, or poly-p-benzamide, is extruded into air then wet spun to form the starting fibers. The resulting fibers are soltly twisted so that the twisting index given as the equation, (wherein TM stands for twist multiplier; N, twisting number per meter; D, fiber denier) becomes 0.2W1. Then, the fiber are drawn and heat treated under an atmosphere with a temperature of 150W400, preferably 200W300°C, thereby giving the objective fibers.
EFFECT: Long-time or multistaged heat treatment is not required and high productivity can be readily reached by using simple facilities.
