Abstract

PURPOSE: The oxidation of a cyclopentanonesulfide derivative results in the formation of the corresponding cyclopentanonesulfoxide derivative, which is then treated with a sulfurphilic reagent such as triethylamine to afford titled compound useful as intermediate of prostaglandin.
CONSTITUTION: A cyclopentanonesulfide derivative of formulaI(R1 is H or group protecting OH; R2 is alkyl; R3 is alkyl; R4 is alkyl, aryl, R5 is H, alkyl) is oxidized with an oxidant such as m-chloroperbenzoic acid to form the corresponding cyclopentanonesulfoxide derivative of formula II, which is treated with a sulfurphilic agent such as trimethyl phosphite to produce 3-(3'-hydroxyl-1'-alkenyl)-4-oxycyclopentanone-2-carboxylic ester of formula III. Thus, an allyl type of alcohol can be introduced to the 3-position in the cyclopentanone ring the configuration can be fixed to α-type.
