Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare immobilized microorganisms having high stablity and catalytic activity, composed of a gel covered with a layer of a desired thickness containing living microorganisms in high concentration, easily (without using mass culturing), by the use of a particular inclusion technique.
CONSTITUTION: Pellet or membrane of gel having a thickness of 2W50 mm and containing 0.01W10 oese of living microbial cells (based on 100 g (wet basis) of gel) is prepared, e.g. by adding the cells or the culturing medium containing the cells to an aqueous solution containing agar, etc. gelling the solution using a gelling agent, etc., and forming the gel to the desired form. The gel is incubated in a medium suitable for the growth of the microorganism at 25W40°C to obtain the layer of the living microbial cells near the gate surface. The thickness of the layer can be controlled by controlling the culturing conditions.
