Abstract

PURPOSE: To culture microorganisms under wide culturing conditions, stably and easily, by placing a porous material which is not metabolized by the microorganisms in the culturing medium, thereby providing a living place to the microorganisms.
CONSTITUTION: Microorganisms are cultured in a medium containing a porous material which is not metabolized by the microorganisms, e.g. natural porous materials such as sponge, rubber foam, etc., or synthetic porous materials such as polyurethane foam, synthetic rubber foam, PVC foam, etc. The pore size of the material is usually ≥ 20μ, pref. ≥ 100μ, and most pref. ≥ 200μ, and most pref. ≥ 200μ. The volume ratio of the material to the medium is usually ≥ 10 cm3, pref. 30W200 cm3/1l. Addition of granules (0.1W2mm in diameter) containing a polymeric carbohydrate to the medium is more preferable for the culturing. The suitable rate of addition is 1W10 g/day/1l of medium.
