The present invention also relates to an antenna array suitable for use in such a radar device. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Radar systems are known which use an antenna array to generate a scanning beam covering an arc by modifying the relative phase of the oscillator signals supplied to the antenna elements of the array. Such an antenna is known, for example, from Skolnik, Rader Handbook and has the configuration shown in FIG. 1 of the present application. One technique for beam scanning is to feed the antenna elements of an antenna array from sequential tap points that are equally spaced on a zigzag or serpentine feedline. The oscillator signal is coupled to the zigzag feed line and the direction of the transmitted signal depends on the frequency of the applied signal. At the center frequency, the length of the feed line between successive antenna elements is an integer of wavelength, and the radiated signals are in phase with each other. This forms a straight ahead or aiming beam. As the frequency increases, for example, the wavelength increases and the wavelength distance between the output tap points increases, which increases the phase difference between successive antenna elements. Therefore, the beam can be obtained from the antenna array whose center is deviated in one direction. By increasing the frequency, it is possible to obtain a beam that is decentered in the other direction. Alternatively, the phase change between the antenna arrays is performed by the phase transition. The main drawback with antenna arrays is that the oscillator signal is reflected back to the oscillator even if there is a slight mismatch between the feed line (whether through phase shifter, delay line or zigzag feed line) and the antenna element. Is to do. In other words, in the aiming beam, which is perpendicular to the length of the antenna array, the antenna elements are fed in phase with each other, so that their reflections add in phase with each other, resulting in a significant reduction in efficiency. FIG. 2 shows a state in which the performance near the aiming beam of such an antenna array deteriorates. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the invention to eliminate the above mentioned drawbacks. The present invention comprises means for transmitting radar signals, means for receiving return signals, and processing means for extracting distance and direction information from said return signals, wherein at least one of the signal transmitting / receiving means is capable of scanning an antenna array. In the directional radar device including the above, the scannable antenna array is provided with a plurality of antenna elements having a directional peak in a characteristic arranged so as not to be perpendicular to the array. It has already been done to operate the antenna array away from the aiming beam to substantially avoid the misalignment problem. However, this means that the individual array elements operate over a portion of the characteristic that is worse than the aiming beam direction characteristic and that one of the array's grating lobes is near the characteristic peak of the element. This can lead to serious problems with directional radar such as missed returns and poor sensitivity. However, the antenna array of the radar array of the present invention alters the direction in which the individual elements work best to solve the above problems. Another consideration for antenna arrays is that the properties of the elements and the properties of the array are decoupled from each other. The central beam direction of this antenna array, that is, the aiming beam position is not perpendicular to the array, and if space is taken into consideration, for example, if the antenna is mounted on the front of a vehicle for the purpose of collision prevention, the antenna is It will be too much. Therefore, a beam deflecting means, eg a prism in front of the antenna array, may be provided to deflect all the beams so that they return substantially vertically to the array. The scannable antenna array can be applied to a transmitted radar signal and a non-scanning antenna coupled to the receiver side of the radar. Alternatively, a non-scanning transmit antenna is used and the scanning array is coupled to the receiver. However, it is preferable to use the same antenna for both the transmitting side and the receiving side of the radar. The reason is that by doing so, the transmission power can be used satisfactorily and the sensitivity of the receiver is not significantly reduced. A circulator is preferably used so that the transmitted and received signals can be separated within the radar array. In another example of the present invention, in an antenna array including a plurality of antenna elements and zigzag feeding means for feeding the antenna elements, the plurality of antenna elements are arranged so as not to be perpendicular to the array. Is characterized by having a directivity peak. If desired, the antenna array may further comprise beam deflecting means arranged in the beam path from the antenna element for deflecting its beam perpendicularly to the array. The beam deflecting means is provided with prism-shaped elements arranged perpendicularly to the wave front from the antenna element. In one example, the surface of the prismatic element through which the wavefront passes during operation is not parallel to the antenna element. In another example, an antireflection film is provided on the surface of the prismatic element on which the wavefront is incident at about 90 degrees. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a block diagram showing the configuration of a known antenna array having a zigzag feed line, FIG. 2 is a characteristic diagram showing the relationship between the output of the antenna array and the angular direction with respect to a fixed amplitude drive signal, and FIG. FIG. 4 is a characteristic diagram showing the relationship between the output and the direction of a single antenna element, FIG. 4 is a block diagram showing the configuration of an example of the antenna array of the present invention, FIG. 5 is a block diagram showing the same radar array, and FIG. It is a block diagram which shows a modification. In these figures, the same parts are designated by the same reference numerals. BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION An antenna array 10 shown in FIG. 1 includes an input / output connecting portion 12 connected to a zigzag or meandering feed line 14, and ten horn antenna elements 16.1 arranged in a linear manner. Through 16.10. These horn antenna elements are coupled to sequential feed tap points on feeder line 14. For the sake of convenience of explanation, ten antenna elements are shown, but it is obvious that more antenna elements, for example, 14 to 30 can be used. As is known, the greater the number of this antenna element, the narrower the beam width produced by the antenna array. FIG. 2 shows the characteristics of the antenna array when signals of various frequencies and constant amplitude are supplied. The beam is scanned as the frequency is changed so that the X-axis becomes related to either the frequency (f) or the angle (φ). The point with 0 on the X-axis represents the aiming beam of the antenna corresponding to the wavelength of the feed signal which is a fraction of the length of the feed line between adjacent antenna elements. As is apparent from the figure, the performance of the antenna arrays in this region is poor individually and it is clear that there are performance peaks on both sides of the aiming beam. As is apparent from the need to avoid automobile collisions, one of the preferred ones to carry out some of these properties is when the scan angle is less than 1/2 of the maximum possible angle. Can be used. Characteristic features suitable for such use are shown between the vertical dashed lines in FIG. However, it is expensive to operate the antenna array away from the aiming beam, in that the first grating lobe from the direction of scanning the antenna to the other direction is within the maximum part of the characteristics of the antenna element. This antenna element typically has performance characteristics over angle as shown by curve N in FIG. Also in FIG. 3, the vertical broken line is substantially the same as the broken line in FIG. As is clear from the figure, this is not the best performing part of the antenna element distance, so that the performance of the antenna array will suffer degradation in addition to the grating lobe problem. The present invention is based on the fact that when adjusting the performance peaks of an antenna element to the intended point of operation of the array, the grating lobe problem is significantly reduced and the performance gain is good. FIG. 4 is a plan view of an antenna array used in the radar system of the present invention. The zigzag power supply line is omitted for convenience of description. In front of each of the antenna elements 16.1 to 16.14, polystyrene prisms 20.1 to 20.14 (modulated as one unit here) are arranged so as to shift the characteristics of the elements from the vertical direction. For best performance, the peak of the element's characteristics should be aligned with the center of the angular range in which the antenna array is intended to be used. Such a state is shown by a curve S in FIG. Further, in FIG. 4, a large prism 22 is arranged in front of all the antenna elements 16 of the array. The purpose of providing this prism 22 is thereby to offset the beam from the array, ie from the polystyrene prism, so that the tilted array of aiming beams is again perpendicular to the array of antenna elements. This is of particular interest in restricted spaces, such as the nose of a motor vehicle when radar is used for collision avoidance or intelligent cruise control purposes. In addition, polystyrene prisms are particularly cost effective for use in the 77 GHz band, and this material is suitable for use in other millimeter wavelength bands. On the other hand, other material-sized technologies are known to those skilled in the art. Ideally, a small prism should be placed as close as possible to the horn so that the beam from each energy is incident on only one prism. It was confirmed that the inclination angle of the small and large prisms was 10.4 °, which gave favorable performance to the 77 GHz radar arrangement for car collision prevention. In the example shown in FIG. 4, the prisms 22 are arranged and arranged so as to form a right triangle, and the surfaces thereof are arranged so as to form zigzag surfaces opposed to each other with the polystyrene prisms 20.1 to 20.14 offset. With such an arrangement, the scanning beam does not enter or exit the main surface at 90 °. Except for this angle, unwanted reflection occurs. Preferably, the prism 22 can be designed so that the principal plane is not parallel to the wavefront at any angle to scan the beam. In a modified example (not shown) of the example shown in FIG. 4, the prism 22 is rotated through 180 ° so that the surface forming the zigzag faces the zigzag prisms 2 0.1 to 20.14, but from here it goes to the left and right. Allow it to diverge. The exit or re-incident main surface of the prism 22 is made substantially parallel to the surfaces forming the openings of the antenna elements 16.1 to 16.14. However, since reflection occurs at the exit or re-entry principal surface of the prism 22, a prism having a thickness of ¼ of the wavelength or an arbitrary odd multiple thereof is deposited on the surface by a known suitable technique. An antireflection film 24 is provided on the surface of the. The refractive index of the material forming such a coating is the geometric mean value of the dielectric and air. In general, due to the angle of incidence of the scanning beam, an antireflection coating attenuates or eliminates unwanted reflections on the surface of the prism 22. Although the present invention is applicable to pulse radar arrays, the preferred array uses frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) arrays. FIG. 5 shows a simple block diagram of an FMCW radar suitable for use with such an antenna. Other information can be obtained from the Skolnik text mentioned above. In this example, the radar oscillator 40 is controlled by the sawtooth signal generator 42 so that the frequency of the oscillator output continuously rises and is reset to the starting value before the rise again. The output terminal of the oscillator 40 is connected to the first input terminal of the circulator 44 and to the scannable antenna array 18 as described above by the second terminal which acts as an input and output terminal for the circulator 44. The return signal from the antenna array 18 enters the second terminal of the circulator and is derived from the third terminal. This return signal is amplified by amplifier 46. The output terminal of the amplifier 46 is coupled to the first input terminal of the mixer 50. The second input terminal of the mixer is connected to the coupler 48, which extracts a portion of the oscillator output. The output of mixer 50 is filtered by low pass filter 52 to extract a differential frequency signal representing the range of the target. The processor 54 is connected so as to receive the output of the low-pass filter 52 and extract the target information required by the application. The output of the ramp signal generator 42 is also provided to the processor 54 so that the angular position of the target can be retrieved by the processor 54. FIG. 6 shows the configuration of a modification of the antenna array of the present invention. In this example, the individual prisms are omitted and the antenna elements 16.1 to 16.10 are arranged in lines inclined with respect to each other so that the characteristics of the antenna elements can be decoupled from the characteristics of the antenna array. Again, a large prism 22 is provided to return the tilted aiming beam to vertical or the antenna array to approximately vertical. The prisms 22 are arranged as shown in FIG. 4B or designed so that the principal plane is not parallel to the wavefront at any angle the beam is scanned. The present invention is not limited to the above-described examples, and various modifications and changes can be made without departing from the scope of the invention. INDUSTRIAL APPLICABILITY A low cost frequency scanning radar array suitable for use in vehicle navigation control and / or collision prevention.
