Abstract

PURPOSE:To simplify the construction of an exchange unit and a main device unit and to allow meticulous and optimum printing control by providing a non-volatile memory which records the characteristics and consumption of the exchange unit on the rotating or linearly moving member on the exchange unit. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic layer 22 is applied on the flank of a photosensitive body driving gear 21 for driving a photosensitive body 1 as the non-volatile memory medium on the exchange unit. The developing characteristics of a developing device 4, the sensitivity of the photosensitive body 1 and the light emission quantity of an eraser are recorded as the characteristic information of the exchange unit on the magnetic layer 22 at the time of shipping the exchange unit. The number of printed copies is recorded as the information on the consumption on the magnetic layer 22. The memory medium is constituted on the rotating or linearly moving member of the exchange unit in such a manner, by which the information quantity is increased. Consequently, the common use of the memory means for recording the characteristics and recording the consumption of the exchange unit which are heretofore separately provided with one memory medium is possible and the common use of most of the interface between the exchange unit and the main unit is possible as well.

2. Description of the Related Art Generally, in order to use an apparatus for a long time in, for example, an electrophotographic copying machine, a consumable item such as a photoconductor, a toner cartridge, a waste toner box, or a developing device, which is a component forming an image forming process. , It is necessary to periodically replace the long-life products such as chargers as replacement units.

On the other hand, the characteristics of the above-mentioned constituent elements, for example, the sensitivity characteristics of the photoconductor and the developing characteristics of the developing device, vary considerably. Therefore, stable image quality cannot always be obtained by simply replacing these replacement units.
Therefore, conventionally, the characteristics of the constituent elements are recorded in the exchange unit as characteristic information, while a reading device for reading the characteristic information is added to the apparatus main body to change the developing bias based on the information and to expose the writing unit. By changing the amount, a constant image quality is always ensured even if the replacement unit is replaced.

Conventionally, as a means of knowing the replacement time of the replacement unit, the number of printed sheets is counted by a mechanical counter mounted on the replacement unit, and when the result reaches the end of the life, the micro mounted on the main body of the apparatus. A means for prohibiting the subsequent printing operation by mechanically detecting with a switch has been used. As means for transmitting the characteristics of the replacement unit to the device body, three micro switches are attached to the device body,
In some replacement units, three protrusions are provided at positions facing the microswitch. This is because when some of the protrusions are removed according to the characteristics of the photoconductor unit at the time of shipment and a replacement unit is attached to the main body of the device, the protrusions selectively turn on and off the microswitches. It was supposed to transmit 3-bit information.

However, the mechanical counter described above has many failures and its structure becomes complicated. Further, since the data concerning the characteristics and the amount of use of the replacement unit are stored, read and written by different means, there is a problem that the structure of the apparatus main body and the replacement unit are complicated. Further, since a mechanical counter or a micro switch is used as the storage means, the amount of information that can be stored and transmitted is small, and fine control cannot be performed. The present invention solves such a problem, and an object of the present invention is to provide an image forming apparatus capable of simplifying the structure of a replacement unit and an apparatus main body and enabling fine and optimal print control. According to the present invention, the amount of information can be increased because the storage medium is formed on the rotating portion or the linearly moving member of the exchange unit. As a result, it is possible to share the storage means for recording the characteristics of the exchange unit and the storage means for recording the usage amount, which were conventionally separately provided, in one storage medium, and it is possible to share most of the interface between the exchange unit and the main body. The configurations of the unit and the apparatus body can be simplified and downsized. Since there is a large amount of information that can be stored and transmitted, fine control is possible. In particular, it is possible to deal with the case where the amount of information of the characteristics of the exchange unit to be transmitted, such as a color copier or a printer, is dramatically increased. In addition, since the number of interfaces is reduced, the degree of freedom in designing the controller of the device body is increased. Further, since the storage medium is originally attached to a member that rotates or moves in parallel, it is not necessary to drive the storage medium again.

When the exchange unit 15 is attached to the apparatus main body 17 and the power switch is turned on, the magnetic head 23 reads the characteristic information of the exchange unit 15 and the usage amount information written in the magnetic layer 22, and the read information is used as a controller. 19

Then, based on various characteristics of the replacement unit 15 and an algorithm for determining the process condition according to the number of printed sheets, which is recorded in advance in the controller 19, the value of the developing bias is calculated from the developing characteristics of the developing device 4 and the number of printed sheets. The light amount of the exposure device 3 is determined from the sensitivity of the photoconductor 1 and the voltage of the eraser 7 is determined from the light emission amount of the eraser 7.

Each time a print command is issued to the apparatus main body 17 and the leading edge of the printing paper 0 sent from the paper feeding apparatus 8 to the main body apparatus 17 is detected by the entry sensor 9, the controller 19 causes the magnetic field of the exchange unit 15 to move. A command to update the usage amount information is issued to the head 23, and the number of printed sheets is updated and recorded every moment. Then, each time the one-page printing operation is completed, the updated number of printed sheets is compared with the life number of the replacement unit 15 stored in the controller 19 in advance. Also, each time the entry sensor 9 detects the leading edge of the printing paper 0, the controller 19 causes the magnetic head 2 to move.
A command for updating the usage amount information is issued to No. 3, and the number of printed sheets is updated and recorded. Each time the one-page printing operation is completed, the number of prints, which is the usage amount information, is compared with the number of lives of the replacement unit 15, and the comparison result is the number of prints of the replacement unit 15 minus the number of prints below a certain value. When the replacement unit 15 is replaced, a display prompting replacement of the replacement unit 15 is displayed on the display device of the apparatus main body 17, and the life of the replacement unit 15-the number of prints =
When it becomes 0, the printing operation is prohibited.

Although the number of printed sheets is recorded as the usage amount information in the above embodiment, the following effects can be obtained by using the number of printed dots. The most serious one of the harmful effects when the replacement unit 15 is used for more than its life is that waste toner is collected in excess of the capacity of the waste toner box 14 and spills into the apparatus body 17. Further, it means that the printing operation is continued even though the amount of toner in the developing device 4 is small, causing aggregation of the toner, or the carrier spills out in the case of two-component development. The amount of waste toner and the amount of toner consumption are proportional to the print area, that is, the number of print dots. Therefore, if the number of print dots is used as the usage amount information, it is possible to reliably avoid the above-mentioned adverse effects that occur when printing is performed with a small number of printed sheets and a high print duty. With the storage capacity of the conventional mechanical counter, the number of printed sheets was limited as the usage amount information, but by using the magnetic storage medium with a storage capacity of several kilobits of this embodiment, the number of printed dots can be changed. It can be treated as information.

In this embodiment, the magnetic layer is used as the photoconductor drive gear 21.
Although it is formed on the side surface, the same effect can be obtained by forming it on another member on the replacement unit 15 that rotates or moves linearly during the printing operation.

Further, although the magnetic layer is used as the storage medium in the present embodiment, the initial characteristics of the replacement unit 15 are printed on the side surface of the photoconductor drive gear 21 instead of the magnetic layer, and the reflection type instead of the magnetic head 23 is printed. It is also possible to use the above optical sensor. As a result, although the usage amount information cannot be recorded, the interface portion can be further simplified, and an error in reading the information due to the floating of the magnetic toner can be eliminated.
