Abstract

PURPOSE:To surely receive a lateral expansion force of an air bag upon operation with a simple structure by forming an outward facing recess in the side peripheral wall of a retainer attached to a vehicle body while forming an inward facing projection on the side peripheral wall of an air bag cover, and by locking a ring to an engaged part therebetween. CONSTITUTION:An outward facing recess 5a is formed in the side peripheral wall 5 of a vehicle body side retainer 4 used for arranging an air bag device in the center part of a steering wheel or the like. An inward facing projection 6 is formed on the side peripheral wall 2 of an air bag cover 1 storing therein an air bag, and a ring locking recess 7 is formed in the outer periphery of the side peripheral wall 2. Upon engagement between the outward facing recess 5a in the retainer 4 and the inward facing projection 6, the ring 3 reinforces the engagement. With this arrangement, the lateral expansion force of the air bag upon operation is received by the entire periphery of the retainer while preventing local stress concentration, thereby it is possible to surely support the air bag with a simple structure.

[Prior Art] A conventional airbag device of this type is shown in FIG. 4 (partial sectional view), which includes an airbag cover 31 that can be ruptured and expanded in an emergency, and the cover 31 is attached to a vehicle body. An air bag 34 in a folded state is contained in a closed space A surrounded by a retainer 32 for the purpose of inflation and an inflator 33 for generating inflation gas.

The airbag 34 that has started to rapidly expand is covered by the cover 31.
It fractures and expands, and then expands into a thick disk shape.
Absorbs the impact on the occupants. Such a conventional airbag device is normally assembled and installed in a vehicle using the following procedure. First, air bag 3 is placed on retainer 32.
4, the ring plate 35, and the inflator 33 are tightened and fixed with assembly bolts 36. and airbag 3
4 is folded into a shape that allows rapid expansion and deployment and is as small as possible, and a cover 31 is placed over it. After that, the fixing member 40 (blind rivet in this figure) is inserted into the insertion hole from the outside of the cover 31 via the washer 39, and after penetrating to the inside of the retainer 32, the fixing member 40 is inserted.
The cover 31 and the retainer 32 are firmly fixed by deforming the central tip side of the body. Thereafter, the airbag device is attached to the vehicle side attachment 38 with the attachment bolt 37. Reference numeral 41 indicates a protective cover. The protective cover 41 is installed on the vehicle.

[Problems to be Solved by the Invention] In the conventional structure described above, when the airbag 34 is inflated, extremely large pressure is applied to the airbag cover 31 in the direction of pulling it out from the retainer 32. Since this pressure is opposed by the rivets 40 and bolts inserted through the insertion holes 42 of the airbag cover 31, a significantly large shearing load is applied to the vicinity of the insertion holes 42 of the cover 31. [Function] In the connection structure between the airbag cover and the retainer of the present invention, a ring is fitted into a recess provided all around the outer surface of the opening edge of the cover, and the cover is assembled with the ring and the retainer. Since the airbag cover is held under pressure and the end side forming the recess is locked to the ring, the shearing load when the airbag cover is ruptured and expanded is distributed over the entire opening of the cover. As a result, there is no local stress concentration, and the connection between the cover and the retainer can be maintained reliably. Further, since only one ring is used as a connecting member, the structure can be made at low cost.

When the airbag 11 is deployed in an emergency, the airbag cover 1 is biased in a direction to be removed from the retainer 4, but at this time, the ring 12 biased upward by the end edge 3a is inserted into the retainer via the tongue portion 2. The ring 12 engages with the bent portion 5a of the side wall 5 of No. 4, and the tongue portion 2 is evenly tightened between the ring 12 and the side wall 5, so that the air bag cover 1 can be easily removed. The applied force is received evenly over the entire circumference of the cover 1. Therefore, local stress is prevented from being applied to the tongue portion 2, and the state in which the airbag cover 1 is reliably held against the retainer 4 is maintained. In addition, in this embodiment, only one ring 12 is used as a connector for connecting the airbag cover 1 to the retainer 4, so a large number of rivets, bolts, washers, etc. are required as in the conventional case. It is possible to provide a connection structure that is cheaper than the case where it is used.

The vicinity of the opening edge is bent outward at a substantially right angle, and the bent portion 5a constitutes a portion that prevents the airbag cover 1 from being removed from the retainer 4. Furthermore, a tongue portion 2 provided at the opening edge of the airbag cover 1 is fitted onto the outer peripheral surface of the side peripheral wall 5 of the retainer 4 . This tongue piece portion 2 is formed along the outer surface of the side peripheral wall 5 of the retainer 4,
A recess 3 into which the ring 12 is fitted and an edge 3a are provided around the entire outer surface of the tongue portion 2. Further, a protrusion 13 that protrudes inward is provided at the opening edge of the airbag cover 1, and the protrusion 13 is a notch formed at the base end side of the side peripheral wall 5 of the retainer 4. 14. Due to the engagement between the protrusion 13 and the notch 14, there is no need to provide the recess 6 in the side peripheral wall 5 of the retainer 4.

In each of the above-described embodiments, the tongue portion 2 has a so-called four-part shape, which is separated at each of the four corners of the air bag cover 1, but the tongue portion 2 is not limited to this, and the tongue portion 2 is separated from each other at the four corners of the air bag cover 1. The shape may be continuous over the entire circumference of the edge.
