BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention belongs to an image data compression technique, and particularly relates to an image processing apparatus and method using a subband encoding method.
[0002]
[Prior art]
The image data compression technique is generally used in the field of image processing for the purpose of reducing the amount of memory for holding image data or shortening the transmission time of image data. There are various image data compression methods depending on the processing mode of image data, and when image data is printed, processing such as rotating and printing the image data is performed at high speed on a limited amount of memory. Therefore, fixed length compression is required. In addition, when image data is exchanged between devices having different resolutions and gradations, a compression method with a hierarchical data configuration is desired in which transmission data having image quality corresponding to the output device can be selected. Especially when transmitting to a display device, although the image quality is not sufficient, a progressive transfer method is required, such as transferring the image data of an object (for example, an icon) that can capture the entire feature and transfer it first, Data compression corresponding to the hierarchy is performed. Further, in the image printing apparatus, when trial printing (draft mode) in which a rough layout can be understood while suppressing toner consumption, data compression processing that retains characteristics even if the image quality is not good is required. In the technique described in Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 1-135265, a subsampled original image is converted into a block, and this is divided into image data obtained by orthogonal transformation and other data, and then compressed and used in an image file. The headline image is played back efficiently.
[0003]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
It can be said that image data is generally composed of two types of areas because of its characteristics. That is, an image area where the gradation changes gently, such as a photograph or a graphic image, and an edge where the gradation changes sharply between the edge of the image and its vicinity, such as a character or a line image It is an area. For human vision, gradation is important in the image area, and resolution is important in the edge area. In the prior art described in the above publication, the original image is subsampled, DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) is performed on the original image, and the transform coefficient is uniformly quantized using one quantization table regardless of the area. . In this case, since one quantization table is used, the data length is a fixed length, but since different quantization is not performed depending on the region, the image data representing the characteristics of the image instead of a large amount of data. There is a disadvantage that cannot be obtained. In addition, there is a drawback that only two types of image quality levels can be selected. An object of the present invention is to provide an image processing apparatus and method capable of generating image data that retains sufficient image characteristics while the amount of data is small .
[0004]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to solve the above-mentioned problem, the invention described in
The image processing apparatus according to
[0005]
According to a third aspect of the present invention, the input two-dimensional multi-valued image data is divided into a plurality of blocks, each pixel in the divided block is frequency-divided, and a high frequency coefficient and a low frequency coefficient are divided. Converting to coefficient data comprising: a step of determining whether a block is an image area block from an edge area block based on the coefficient data; and a quantization bit number of the high frequency coefficient of each block based on the determination And the number of quantization bits of the low frequency coefficient are constant regardless of the area, and the number of quantization bits of the high frequency of the edge area block and the number of quantization bits of the frequency coefficient of the image area block The coefficient data is quantized so as to generate the quantized data, and the quantized data is encoded and compressed. Generating the quantized data by de-encoding the input compressed data, and de-quantizing the generated quantized data to generate coefficient data comprising high-frequency coefficients and low-frequency coefficients. And, among the dequantized coefficient data, the edge area block is inversely transformed using only a high frequency coefficient, and the image area block is inversely transformed using only a low frequency coefficient to generate original image data. An image processing method is provided.
According to a fourth aspect of the present invention, in the image processing method according to the third aspect, in the step of inversely transforming the frequency coefficient to generate the original image data, inverse transform is performed for the discrete block. .

【The invention's effect】
As described above , according to the present invention, for each block of input image data, the sum of the number of quantization bits of the high-frequency coefficient and the number of quantization bits of the low-frequency coefficient is made constant regardless of the area, and the edge By making the quantization bit number of the high frequency coefficient of the area block equal to the quantization bit number of the low frequency coefficient of the image area block, the data length of each block is all fixed, and each block has a fixed length. since the coefficient data required to represent the characteristics of the image in the data becomes a fixed length at every block, the access to the data of each block can be easily carried out, moreover, the edge region blocks the high frequency coefficients The image quality is degraded because the image is generated using only the quantized output of the image, and the image region block generates the image using only the quantized output of the low frequency coefficient. Characteristics of the image can produce enough left image data. In addition, by performing image generation for each block instead of all blocks divided for the input image data, it is possible to generate image data that can grasp the characteristics of the image although the image quality and resolution are reduced, In addition, since the data amount is reduced, a reduced image can be easily generated.
