Description of the Related Art Various ink supply units have been proposed and put to practical use in an ink jet recording apparatus that records characters and the like on a recording medium by discharging ink droplets from nozzles. In particular, an ink cartridge configured to supply ink by inserting an ink needle into a sealing member made of rubber or the like and sealing the ink sealed in a flexible bag with the ink is common in a small-sized ink jet recording apparatus. The ink cartridge formed of the above-mentioned flexible bag is generally not configured to move along with the print head on the carriage along the recording medium, but is fixed in the recording device, and the ink is fixed on the carriage by a flexible tube or the like. Supplied to the print head. However, the above-described configuration has a problem that the ink supply system is complicated, the volume efficiency is low, and the cost is high.

When the ink cartridge constituted by the above-described flexible bag is mounted on the carriage, there is a problem in durability of the bag, and there is a problem that the volume efficiency is poor and the carriage becomes unnecessarily large. Further, in order to cope with such a problem, an ink cartridge configured to be impregnated with ink in an ink tank containing a porous material or the like and mounted on a carriage is disclosed in, for example, JP-B-61-11794. However, in the configuration containing the porous material or the like, the ink tank and the print head are integrally formed, and when supplying or replacing ink, the entire print head must be replaced. In addition, there is a problem that the unit price of the ink cartridge including the print head becomes extremely high.

A print head 3 is integrally provided near the platen 1, and an ink tank 8 containing a foam 7 made of a porous member such as a polyurethane foam is provided behind the print head 3. The ink tank 8 has a lid 9 provided with a vent hole 10 for allowing air to be taken in, and a trapezoidal projection 11 for forming a close contact with the foam 7 on the bottom surface thereof. An ink chamber 12 for taking out and holding ink in the foam 7 from the center downward is formed. Further, a communication hole 13 extending from the lower end of the ink chamber 12 in the direction of the head 3 is provided, and an end of the communication hole 13 is sealed by a sealing member 14 made of an elastic member such as rubber.
The ink impregnated in the ink tank 8 is supplied to the print head 3 by inserting an ink needle 5 communicating with the print head 3 through the sealing member 14 through the filter chamber 4. Note that the ink chamber 12 and the communication hole 13 are integrally formed, and are sealed by the sealing member 14 and the foam 7.

Numerals 20 are sequentially supplied into the ink chamber 12 by capillary action to fill the ink chamber 12 by the amount consumed from the ink chamber 12 (FIG. 2 (a)). As the consumption of the ink 20 further proceeds, the ink 20 in the fork 7 gradually depletes, and a part of the air j that has entered the foam 7 by replacing the ink 20 with the ink 20 is subjected to a large resistance. When the ink reaches the bottom of the form 7, a part of the ink outlet is exposed. When the consumption of ink has progressed so far, a partial interruption occurs between the ink in the foam 7 and the ink in the ink chamber 12 that have been communicated at the ink outlet (FIG. 2B). Even in this state, the air does not flow into the ink chamber 12 due to the flow resistance of the air with respect to the foam 7 and the buoyancy of the air due to the outlet above the ink chamber 12. Even if it does, the air that has flowed in due to the buoyancy of the air stably stays above the ink chamber 12. Further, when the ink 20 in the foam 7 is depleted, the ink in the foam 7 and the ink in the ink chamber 12 are finally separated, and the ink in the ink tank 8 becomes an ink end state.

An ink chamber 12 having a depth of 20 mm and an inner diameter of 6 mm is provided below a transparent ink tank 8 of cc, and a polyurethane foam contained in the ink tank 8 is filled with transparent ink from which dye has been removed. By visually observing the inside of the ink chamber 12 while discharging 0.5 cc per minute with an injection needle inserted into the lower end of the ink cartridge, 24 cc of ink can be discharged, and it is possible to discharge 350 cc of A4 size recording paper as standard. Recording and writing were possible.

By doing so, the ink can be taken out more stably from the ink tank and supplied to the print head, so that the ink cartridge containing the impregnating member in the ink tank can be configured separately from the print head. There is a big effect that.
