Abstract
【解決手段】2枚の偏光板18,19を備えた画像表示パネル11の観察側偏光板18の外面側に、その偏光板18の透過軸と平行な方向に透過軸を向けて視野角制御用偏光板20を配置し、画像表示パネルの観察側偏光板18と視野角制御用偏光板20との間に、一対の基板22,23の内面それぞれに互いに対向する電極24,24を設け、基板22,23間に封入された液晶層26の液晶分子を一様な配向状態に配向させてなり、電極24,25間に液晶分子を基板面の法線に対して斜めに傾いた方向に配向させる電圧を印加したとき、前記法線に対して予め定めた角度傾いた方向の斜め透過光に対し、1/2波長の整数倍の位相差を与える視野角制御用液晶素子21を配置した。

Description
間隙を存して対向する観察側基板及び反対側基板と、これらの基板の対向する内面の両方または一方に設けられ、複数の画素を形成する第1と第2の電極と、前記観察側基板と反対側基板との間に封入された液晶層と、前記観察側基板及び反対側基板を挟んで配置された一対の偏光板とからなり、前記複数の画素毎に、前記第1と第2の電極間への画像データに応じた電圧の印加により光の透過を制御して画像を表示する画像表示パネルと、
前記画像表示パネルの一方の偏光板の外面側に、その偏光板の透過軸と平行な方向に透過軸を向けて配置された視野角制御用偏光板と、
前記画像表示パネルの前記一方の偏光板と前記視野角制御用偏光板との間に配置され、間隙を存して対向する一対の基板と、これらの基板の対向する内面それぞれに設けられた互いに対向する電極と、前記一対の基板間に封入され、液晶分子が一様な配向状態に配向した液晶層とからなり、前記電極間に前記液晶層の液晶分子を前記基板面の法線に対して斜めに傾いた方向に配向させる電圧を印加したとき、前記法線に対して予め定めた角度に傾いた方向の斜め透過光に対し、1/2波長の整数倍の位相差を与える視野角制御用液晶素子とを備えることを特徴とする。

この(1)式から解るように、前記視野角制御用液晶素子21の法線方向S0から観察したとき、つまり前記偏光板18,20の透過軸18a,20aに対する液晶分子26aの分子長軸Oの交差角θがθ=0°のときの前記視野角制御系の透過光強度Iは、前記視野角制御用液晶素子21の液晶分子26aの配向状態の変化(Δndの変化)にかかわらず最大強度である。
Claims (6)
- 間隙を存して対向する観察側基板及び反対側基板と、これらの基板の対向する内面の両方または一方に設けられ、複数の画素を形成する第1と第2の電極と、前記観察側基板と反対側基板との間に封入された液晶層と、前記観察側基板及び反対側基板を挟んで配置された一対の偏光板とからなり、前記複数の画素毎に、前記第1と第2の電極間への画像データに応じた電圧の印加により光の透過を制御して画像を表示する画像表示パネルと、
前記画像表示パネルの一方の偏光板の外面側に、その偏光板の透過軸と平行な方向に透過軸を向けて配置された視野角制御用偏光板と、
前記画像表示パネルの前記一方の偏光板と前記視野角制御用偏光板との間に配置され、間隙を存して対向する一対の基板と、これらの基板の対向する内面それぞれに設けられた互いに対向する電極と、前記一対の基板間に封入され、液晶分子が一様な配向状態に配向した液晶層とからなり、前記電極間に前記液晶層の液晶分子を前記基板面の法線に対して斜めに傾いた方向に配向させる電圧を印加したとき、前記法線に対して予め定めた角度に傾いた方向の斜め透過光に対し、1/2波長の整数倍の位相差を与える視野角制御用液晶素子とを備えることを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 視野角制御用液晶素子の一対の基板の内面の電極はそれぞれ、画像表示パネルの複数の画素が配列した画面の全域に対応する一枚膜状電極であることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 視野角制御用液晶素子は、液晶層の液晶分子を、一対の基板間において前記基板面に対して実質的に垂直に配向させた垂直配向型素子からなり、前記一対の基板の電極が設けられた内面にそれぞれ、前記電極間に電圧を印加したときの前記液晶分子の倒れ方向を、画像表示パネルの一方の偏光板及び視野角制御用偏光板の透過軸または吸収軸と平行な方向に規定する配向処理が施されていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 視野角制御用液晶素子は、液晶層の液晶分子を、一対の基板間においてツイストさせることなく前記基板面に対して実質的に平行に配向させた水平配向型素子からなり、前記一対の基板の電極が設けられた内面にそれぞれ、前記液晶分子を、画像表示パネルの一方の偏光板及び視野角制御用偏光板の透過軸または吸収軸と平行な方向に配向させる配向処理が施されていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 画像表示パネルの一方の偏光板と視野角制御用液晶素子との間に、もう1枚の視野角制御用偏光板が、その透過軸を前記画像表示パネルの前記一方の偏光板の透過軸と平行にして配置されていることを特徴とする請求項3または4に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 視野角制御用液晶素子の一対の基板の電極が設けられた内面は、画像表示パネルの複数の画素が配列した画面の上下方向と実質的に平行な方向に配向処理されていることを特徴とする請求項3または4に記載の液晶表示装置。
