Abstract
7A reference signal is provided based on time division multiplexed pilot data.
The modulated signals are received and processed to provide received samples, which are subsequently further processed to provide pilot symbols. A reference signal is generated based on the available pilot symbols (722a, 722b). The reference signal is a series of "prediction" indicative of a future estimate of one or more characteristics (eg, phase and amplitude) of one or more carrier signals used to generate the modulated signal. ("5A-5E" in the figure). The reference signal can be generated using a number of techniques. The reference signal may be obtained, for example, by linearly extrapolating the pilot symbols from the previous time interval (FIG. 5B), by curve fitting the pilot symbols (FIG. 5C), by averaging the pilot symbols (standard or global). (FIG. 5D) can be generated.

Description
【0001】
かかる第1世代の標準の1つは、以後IS−95標準として参照され、参照することによりここに組込まれる、“TIA/EIA/IS−95 Terminal−Base Station Compatibility Standard for Dual−Mode Wideband Spread Spectrum Cellular System (相対モード広帯域スペクトル拡散多重セルラシステムのための端末−基地局互換性標準)”である。

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to data communication. In particular, the present invention relates to a new and advanced method and apparatus for providing a reference signal from time division multiplexed (TDM) pilot data.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Modern communication systems are required to adapt to various applications. One such communication system is a code division multiple access (CDMA) system that supports voice and data between users over a terrestrial link. The use of CDMA technology in a multiple access communication system is described in "SPREAD SPECTRUM MULTIPLE ACCESS COMMUNICATION SYSTEM USING SATELLITE OR TERRESTRIAL Satellites (both assigned to the assignee of the present invention and incorporated herein by reference). US Patent No. 4,901,307 entitled "Spread Spectrum Multiple Access Communication System Using Repeaters" and "SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR GENERATE WAVEFORMS IN A CDMA CELLULAR TELEPHONE SYSTEM" (for waveform generation in CDMA cellular telephone systems). U.S. Pat. No. 5,103,103, entitled "Method and Apparatus"). It is disclosed in EP 59.
[0003]
CDMA systems are generally designed to conform to one or more standards. One such first generation standard is hereafter referred to as the IS-95 standard, which is hereby incorporated by reference, "TIA / EIA / IS-95 Terminal-Base Station Compatibility Standard for Dual-Mode Wideband Spread Spread. Cellular System (terminal-base station compatibility standard for relative mode wideband spread spectrum multiplexed cellular systems) ". CDMA according to IS-95 allows transmission of voice data and (even less efficiently) packet data. A newer generation standard for transmitting packet data more efficiently is "3rd Provided by an association named "Generation Partnership Project" (3GPP) and includes document numbers 3G TS 25.211, 3G TS 25.212, 3G TS 25.213, and 3G TS 25.214. As embodied in the bibliography, these are generally readily available, the 3GPP standard is hereafter referred to as the W-CDMA standard, and is incorporated herein by reference.
[0004]
The W-CDMA standard is capable of supporting multiple users and specifies a channel structure designed for efficient transmission of packet data. In accordance with the W-CDMA standard, a terminal user is generally assigned a "dedicated" channel on the downlink and uplink during the call. The downlink is referred to as transmission from the base station to the terminal, and the uplink is referred to as transmission from the terminal to the base station. Dedicated channels are available for voice communication and may also be used for packet data communication.
[0005]
According to the W-CDMA standard, the dedicated channel has a time division multiplex (TDM) structure, in which the data transmission is divided into radio frames, each radio frame has a duration of 10 msec, and 15 Including slots. Each slot is further divided into fields used to carry packet data and other information. For example, one field in each slot is used for pilot data associated with a particular dedicated channel, one or more fields in each slot are used for packet data, and other fields are used for packet data. It may be used for signaling information. At the transmitter unit, packets, signaling, and pilot data are used to modulate in-phase and quadrature carrier signals.
[0006]
At the receiver, the time-multiplexed pilot data is processed to generate a "reference" signal having a phase and amplitude close to the phase and amplitude of the received (quadrature) carrier signal. Used and used. The reference signal is then used to coherently demodulate the received signal to recover the packet and signaling data. Pilot data is simply available for a small portion of each slot, and the reference signal is evaluated for a time period in which no pilot data is present.
[0007]
The reference signal is typically generated in a receiver using pilot data that occurs periodically over a short period of time. The accuracy of the generated reference signal directly affects the performance of the demodulation process, which in turn determines the performance of the communication system. Further, if it is possible to "predicted" the reference signal, the demodulation can be performed in real time, thereby reducing the need to temporarily store received data or Exclude.
[0008]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
Thus, techniques that can be used to accurately and efficiently generate reference signals based on time-multiplexed data, such as techniques used for dedicated channels in W-CDMA systems, are highly desirable. I have.
[0009]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
The present invention provides techniques for generating a reference signal that represents a future estimate (ie, prediction) of the phase and amplitude of a carrier signal that is used to generate a signal that is modulated in a communication system. Each reference signal is generated based on currently available pilot data (eg, the previous slot).
[0010]
An aspect of the present invention provides a method for generating a reference signal based on time multiplexed pilot data. In accordance with this method, a modulated signal is received and processed to provide received samples, and then the received samples are further processed to provide pilot symbols. A reference signal is generated based on available pilot symbols. The reference signal is a series of "continuous" that represents a future estimate of one or more features (eg, phase and amplitude) of one or more carrier signals used to generate the modulated signal. Includes "predicted" pilot symbols. The reference signal can be generated using a number of techniques. For example, the reference signal may be extrapolated (e.g., linearly) from a previous slot, the pilot symbol may be curved fit, and the pilot symbol (unweighted or weighted) may be (standard or unweighted). Or by taking an average) or by some other technique.
[0011]
Another aspect of the present invention provides a receiver unit that suitably operates to process a physical channel in a CDMA communication system. The receiver unit includes a receiver and at least one demodulator element. A receiver receives and processes the modulated signal and provides received samples indicating data transmitted on the physical channel. Each demodulator element includes a data processing unit and a pilot processing unit. A data processing unit processes the received samples to provide symbols sent on the channel. A pilot processing unit processes the symbols whose channels have been opened to provide pilot symbols, and further generates a reference signal based on the available pilot symbols. The reference signal provides a future estimate of one or more characteristics (eg, phase and amplitude) of one or more carrier signals used to generate the modulated signal. Includes consecutive predicted pilot symbols to represent. The reference signal is based on available pilot symbols and can be extrapolated, curve-fitted, averaged, weighted averaged, or averaged overall, or generated using some other technique. .
[0012]
Hereinafter, various concepts, embodiments, and features of the present invention will be described in more detail.
[0013]
The features, properties and advantages of the present invention will become more apparent from the detailed description set forth below when taken in conjunction with the drawings, which are correspondingly designated by like reference numerals throughout.

In a given transmission mode in the W-CDMA standard, a terminal may transmit multiple signals from multiple antennas of a single base station in a certain physical channel format, such as a dedicated physical channel (DPCH) for the downlink. [0018]
The channel data indicated for each physical channel follows a particular frame format defined for that physical channel. Channel data for dedicated physical channels in the W-CDMA standard includes packet data, signal data, and pilot data or combinations thereof, and frame formats for dedicated physical channels are described in further detail below.
[0019]
Channel data for each physical channel is provided to a modulator (MOD) 216 and scrambled using a scramble sequence (for an IS-95 CDMA system), covered using a channelization code, Then, spreading is performed using a spreading code (for example, a PN code). Spreading with a spreading code is referred to by the W-CDMA standard as "scrambling". The channelization code may be an orthogonal variable spreading factor (OVSF) code (for W-CDMA systems), a Walsh code (for IS-95 CDMA systems), or a specific CDMA system or standard to be implemented. May be some orthogonal code further according to The spread data is then provided to a transmitter (TMTR) 218 and quadrature modulated, filtered, and amplified to generate one or more downlink signals. The downlink signal is transmitted over the air from one or more antennas 220. The downlink procedure is described in further detail in the IS-95 and W-CDMA standards.

At the receiver unit, the downlink signal is received by

The hardware described above supports the transmission of packet data, messages, voice, video, and other forms of communication on the downlink. Also, the bidirectional communication system supports uplink transmissions from terminals to base stations. However, for simplicity, the uplink processing is not shown in FIG.

For IS-95 CDMA systems, Walsh codes having a fixed length of 64 chips are used to cover the traffic channels, each traffic channel having variables but a limited data rate (eg, ≤ 32 Kbps). For W-CDMA systems, OVSF codes with variable length are used to cover the traffic channels. The length of the OVSF code varies from 4 to 512 chips and depends on the data rate of the physical channel. The OVSF code is described in more detail in the W-CDMA standard and U.S. patent application Ser. No. 09 / 655,609 filed on the same date.

FIG. 4A is a diagram of a frame format and a slot format for a dedicated physical channel defined by the W-CDMA standard. Different frame formats are generally defined by the W-CDMA standard for each type of physical channel, such as a downlink dedicated channel (DPCH), a downlink shared channel (DSCH), etc. . Data transmitted on each physical channel is divided into radio frames, and each radio frame includes 15 slots classified as slots 0 to 14. Each slot is further divided into one or more fields used to carry packets, signals, and pilot data, or a combination thereof.
[0031]
As shown in FIG. 4, for the dedicated physical channel, the
[0032]
Table 1 describes some of the slot formats for dedicated physical channels specified by version V3.1.1 of the W-CDMA standard. Each slot format in Table 1 defines the length (in bits) of each field in the slot. As shown in Table 1, the bit rate of the dedicated physical channel can vary between a range of values (eg, 15 Kbps to 1920 Kbps) and a correspondingly varying number of bits in each slot. For some of the slot formats, the one or more fields may be omitted (ie, length = 0).
[Table 1]
[0033]
According to the W-CDMA standard, each dedicated physical channel is combined with its own pilot information. Dedicated pilots support beamforming that provides improved directivity for data transmission, which improves performance and reduces interference. The phase of the modulated signal can be changed (and generally changed) from one beamformed signal to another. Thus, each dedicated physical channel is provided with its own pilot.
[0034]
As defined by the W-CDMA standard, the pilot data for each slot includes a particular symbol pattern (ie, a defined array of complex symbols). At the transmitting unit, the pilot data is used to modulate the in-phase and quadrature carrier signals. Since the pilot data is a known pattern, the receiving unit can process the received signal, recover the pilot data, and evaluate the phase and amplitude of the received carrier signal. The pilot data can thus be used to generate a "reference" signal at the receiver unit, which in turn coherently demodulates the transmitted packet and signal data on a dedicated physical channel. Used for The reference signal can also be used to coherently demodulate other physical channels, such as shared physical channels.
[0035]
Table 2 lists the pilot symbol patterns defined by the W-CDMA standard for non-diversity antennas. Referring to Table 1, the pilot field may have one of four different lengths varying from 2 bits to 16 bits. Also according to the W-CDMA standard, a different pilot symbol pattern is used for each of the 15 slots of a particular radio frame. Thus, four sets of fifteen pilot symbol patterns are defined and are shown in Table 2. Each pilot symbol pattern contains one, two, four or eight complex symbols used to modulate the in-phase and quadrature carrier signals at the transmitter.

[0039]
Numerous methods are available for coherently demodulating time multiplexed packets and signal data with pilot data. In one method, the packet and signal data for the current slot (i) is transmitted by pilot data P (i) for the current slot (in a W-CDMA system, this is transmitted at the end of the slot to generate a reference signal). ) Is temporarily stored until it is received and processed (using old pilot data). Next, the packet and signal data for the current slot are derived and demodulated using the generated reference signal. For these methods, pilot data P (i) at the end of the current slot (i) is used to generate a "past" estimate of the phase and amplitude of the carrier signal, and this data is used to generate the pilot signal of the carrier signal. It is required that the data be temporarily stored until it is received and processed.
[0040]
In certain other methods, the pilot data P (i-1) at the end of pilot slot (i-1) is processed to generate a reference signal (generally belongs to the previous pilot data, e.g., P (i-2)), which is then used to demodulate the packet and signal data transmitted by the current slot (i). For these methods, the pilot data in the previous slot is used to generate a "future" estimate of the phase and amplitude of the carrier signal. These methods allow real-time processing of the data received by the current slot (i), and the data storage requirements can be substantially reduced or possibly eliminated. Various techniques can be used to generate an estimate of the phase and amplitude of the carrier signal, as described in further detail below.
[0041]
FIG. 5A illustrates the use of interpolation to generate a reference signal. Interpolation is used to generate a "past" estimate of the phase and amplitude of the received carrier signal.
[0042]
FIG. 5B illustrates the use of extrapolation to generate the reference signal. Extrapolation can be used to generate a "future" estimate of the phase and amplitude of the received carrier signal.
[0043]
FIG. 5C is a diagram illustrating use of a curve fitting method for generating a reference signal. The curve fitting method can be used to generate past and / or future estimates of the phase and amplitude of the received carrier signal. As shown in FIG. 5C,
[0044]
FIG. 5D illustrates the use of weighted averaging to generate the reference signal. The weighted averaging method may generate, by itself or in combination with one or more other techniques, a past and / or future estimate of the phase and amplitude of the received carrier signal. , Can be used.
[0045]
FIG. 5E illustrates the use of global averaging to generate a reference signal. The global averaging method may also generate, by itself or in combination with one or more other techniques, a past and / or future estimate of the phase and amplitude of the received carrier signal. Can be used. As shown in FIG. 5E,
[0046]
5B-5E illustrate some techniques that can generate a reference signal that includes a future estimate (ie, "prediction") of the phase and amplitude of the received carrier signal. Still other techniques can be used to generate future estimates for phase and amplitude, which are within the concept of the invention.
[0047]
In one embodiment, the phase and amplitude of the reference signal can be defined using (complex) polynomials. For example, first order polynomials can be used for linear interpolation and linear extrapolation. Reference signal,
(Equation 1)
, Is a first-order polynomial
(Equation 2)
Can be displayed as Where a1(I) and a0(I) is the polynomial coefficient, applied for slot i, index j is the time unit in slot i (eg, a symbol period, as described below), and
(Equation 3)
Is a complex array representing the phase and amplitude of the reference signal at time unit j for slot i. Coefficient a1(I) and a0(I) is generally recalculated when new pilot data is received, but is reused if the quality of the received pilot data is degraded (or unusable) (eg, new slot Can be extrapolated to).
[0048]
In one embodiment, the reference signal includes a series of complex "reference symbols", one reference symbol for each symbol time. Each reference symbol defines the instantaneous phase and amplitude of the reference signal at a particular symbol time. Referring to Table 1, each slot includes a specific number of bits having a number corresponding to the bit rate of the slot. A pair of bits are grouped to form a complex symbol, and so the number of symbols in each slot is half the number of bits. For demodulation, the reference symbol representing the instantaneous phase and amplitude of the reference signal at symbol time j is the one or more symbols received at symbol time j for one or more physical channels. Used to demodulate the The number of reference symbols generated for each slot follows the particular slot format and varies from 5 symbols (for 15 Kbps) to 640 symbols (for 1920 Kbps). In equation (1), the index j thus increases from (0, 1,... 4) for the lowest bit rate of 15 Kbps to (0, 1,... 639) for the highest bit rate of 1920 Kbps. To change.
[0049]
For linear extrapolation, the coefficients for equation (1) are
(Equation 4)
Where P (i-1) and P (i-2) are the pilot data in slots (i-1) and (i-2), respectively, which are the received carrier signals. And the phase and amplitude ofslotIs the duration of the slot (eg, Tslot= 5,... Or 640 according to the bit rate of the slot. ).
[0050]
Higher order polynomials can be used for other reference signal generation techniques. For example, for a curve fitting technique using pilot data from four slots, the reference signal
(Equation 5)
Can be defined to represent a third order polynomial. In general, an Nth order polynomial for a reference signal is
(Equation 6)
Can be displayed as Coefficient a in equation (2)0(I), a1(I), ..., aN(I) can be determined using any of the techniques described above (eg, curve fitting, averaging, and others).

FIG. 6 shows an implementation of a portion of a

In a typical implementation, the received signal is the chip rate of the received signal, fc, Higher sample rate, fs, Sampled at For example, for an IS-95 CDMA system, the chip rate is fc= 1.2288 Mcps (or 3.84 Mcps for W-CDMA systems), but with sample rates of, for example, 8x (ie, 8x chips), 16x (ie, 16x chips), 32x (ie, 32x chips). , Or other multiple chip rates. The high sample rate allows precise adjustment of timing for "zoom in" at path locations.

Thus, each pilot processor 722 may receive 1-8 pilot symbols for each slot and filter this pilot symbol for each slot to generate one or more filtered pilot symbols. it can. For example, each pilot processor 722 filters (eg, averages) the pilot symbols received in each slot to generate one filtered pilot symbol corresponding to the phase and amplitude of the pilot in that slot. be able to. Alternatively, at other antennas, each pilot processor 722 does not perform any filtering of pilot symbols.
[0063]
Each pilot processor 722 includes a reference signal,
