本発明は、反射型液晶表示装置に関するものである。

【従来の技術】
従来の反射型液晶表示装置の概略構成および電圧―輝度特性について説明する。図10(a)は、従来の反射型液晶表示装置における液晶パネルの概略構成を示す図である。図10(a)において、50は、反射型液晶表示装置であり、外光または後述するフロントライト52の光を照明光源として画像等を表示する。52は、フロントライトであり、光源51を具備し、光源51が発光する光を後述する反射型液晶パネルへ向かって照射する。53は、偏光板であり、一軸のみの光(偏光)を通す。54は、反射型液晶パネルであり、偏光板53を透過した光を反射する反射層と反射層上に形成される液晶層を有する。

上述した反射型液晶表示装置50の一例として、外光の照射量が少ないときでも充分な輝度で表示を行い、かつ電力消費も抑えられた反射型液晶表示装置が開示されている(例えば、特許文献1参照。)。
また、反射型液晶表示装置50の他の例として、バックライト又はフロントライトを備えた液晶表示装置の使用者が、使用場所の外光の明暗のレベルに応じてバックライト又はフロントライトを点灯しあるいは消灯するという煩雑な操作を行わなくてもよいようにする反射型液晶表示装置が開示されている(例えば、特許文献2参照。)。

次に、図10(a)に示した反射型液晶パネル54の電圧―輝度特性について説明する。図10(b)は、図10(a)に示した反射型液晶パネル54の電圧―輝度特性を示す図である。尚、図10(b)に示す電圧−輝度特性は、反射型液晶パネル54がノーマリーブラック(電圧がかかっていないときに画面が黒い)である場合を示している。図10(b)に示すように、反射型液晶パネル54に印加する電圧が高くなるのに応じてその輝度が大きくなるが、波長分散特性により、輝度が飽和してくると同じ電圧でも色(R(赤),G(緑),B(青))によって輝度が異なってくる。従って、輝度が飽和する附近で電圧が変化すると白色度(白色に見える度合い)が変化する。そのため、従来は、白色度の変化が許容範囲内になるよう輝度が飽和する手前までの電圧となる電圧設定を行っていた。

また、従来は、図10(a)に示すようにフロントライト52の導光板の裏面にはARコート(反射防止膜)、反射型液晶パネル54のパネル面には偏光板53が貼合された構造が一般的である。このときのコントラストは10以下がほとんどであり、低コントラストであるため、色再現範囲も狭く、また、導光板自身で発生するモアレも顕著に見えてしまうため、表示品質は非常に悪いものであった。このようにもともと表示品質はそれほど高いものではなかったため、フロントライト点灯時/消灯時あるいはテキスト表示/画像表示で表示品質をそれぞれ最適化する必要性もなかった。尚、テキスト表示とは、文字情報の表示であり、画像表示とは、図や写真などの画像情報の表示である。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
しかしながら、例えば、偏光板53を導光板に貼合する構造を採用し、コントラストを30程度まで達成できる反射型液晶表示装置が実現されている。これにより、表示品質が向上したため、反射型液晶表示装置の使用状況に応じて、より高品質な表示を実現する必要性が生じている。例えば、使用状況に応じてより高品質な表示を実現する以下の経験則が判明した。
(1)外光下では明るさが十分あるため逆に黒をより黒くした方がよい。
(2)暗めの部屋ではフロントライトを点灯するだけでは明るさは十分とは言えず、この場合は明るめの表示にした方がよい。
(3)画像を表示する場合は黒をより黒くし、逆にテキストを表示する場合はコントラストが低くても気にならない。

しかしながら、上述した従来の反射型液晶表示装置50のように、本来もっと輝度を高くできるにもかかわらず、白色度の変化を抑えるよう一定の電圧設定を行うことは、最大輝度の明るさが低くなるという問題を生じる。その対策として、例えばフロントライトの光源の輝度を増やして最大輝度を明るくする手段も考えられるが、消費電力が増えるという問題があり、特に携帯用端末用の表示装置には適用が困難であった。
そこで、上述した経験則を基に使用状況に応じて内部電圧の設定やフロントライトの光源の光量などを変化させ、より高品質な表示を実現することを課題としている。

この発明は、上述した事情を考慮してなされたもので、使用状況に応じて、より高品質な表示を実現する反射型液晶表示装置を提供することを目的とする。

【課題を解決するための手段】
この発明は、上述した課題を解決すべくなされたもので、本発明による反射型液晶表示装置においては、光を反射する反射層を備える反射型液晶パネルと、反射型液晶パネルを照射するフロントライトと、フロントライトの点灯状態を示すフロントライト点灯判別信号に応じて、反射型液晶パネルに印加する白表示電圧を制御する制御手段とを具備することを特徴とする

これにより、本発明による反射型液晶表示装置においては、フロントライトの点灯状態を示すフロントライト点灯判別信号に応じて、反射型液晶パネルに印加する白表示電圧を制御できるので、例えば、液晶画面が全体的に明るさの足りなくなることが多いフロントライト点灯時に、白表示電圧を高めに制御して画面の輝度をより明るくすることが出来る。すなわち、使用状況に応じたより高品質な表示を実現することができる。

【発明の実施の形態】
以下、発明の実施の形態を説明する。
まず、本発明の第1の実施形態である反射型液晶表示装置の概略構成について図を用いて説明する。
図1(a)は、本発明の第1の実施形態における反射型液晶表示装置の概略構成を示す図である。図1(a)において、1は、反射型液晶表示装置であり、外光または後述するフロントライト3の光を照明光源として液晶を制御することで画像情報や文字情報等を表示する。3は、フロントライトであり、光源2を具備し、光源2が発光する光を後述する反射型液晶パネル5へ向かって照射する。4は、偏光板であり、特定の偏光のみを通す。

5は、反射型液晶パネルであり、液晶の背面に光を反射する反射層を設けた液晶パネルである。すなわち、反射型液晶パネル5は、液晶の背面に設けた反射層により、液晶の前面から偏光板4を介して入射する光を反射して画像情報や文字情報等を表示する。6は、制御部であり、光源2の点灯/消灯や、反射型液晶パネル5の液晶への電圧印加など、反射型液晶表示装置1が画像情報や文字情報等を表示するための種々の制御を行う。例えば、制御部6は、反射型液晶パネル5の各画素単位で液晶を駆動する駆動信号をデータバスライン経由で供給する。更に、制御部6は、反射型液晶パネル5の液晶に印加する駆動電圧の最大値をフロントライト3の点灯/消灯に応じて制御する。尚、制御部6による制御の詳細については後述する。

尚、本実施形態における反射型液晶表示装置1は、図1(a)に示した以外にも、一般的な反射型液晶表示装置が備える構成と同様の構成を備えてもよい。また、本実施形態における反射型液晶表示装置1は、偏光板4とフロントライト3の導光板とを貼り合わせることで、コントラストを30程度に高めている。また、上述したように、反射型液晶表示装置1のコントラストが30程度であることに限定されず、任意のコントラストであってよいが、本実施形態の特徴をより効果的に利用するならば、コントラストが15以上あることが好ましい。

次に、図1(a)に示した反射型液晶パネル5の電圧―輝度特性について説明する。図1(b)は、図1(a)に示した反射型液晶パネル5の電圧−輝度特性を示す図である。尚、図1(b)に示す電圧−輝度特性は、反射型液晶パネル5がノーマリーブラック(電圧がかかっていないとき画面が黒い)である場合を示している。図1(b)において、縦軸は相対輝度であり、横軸は液晶印加電圧である。また、液晶印加電圧Voff1、Voff2は、黒を表示する際に液晶に印加する最小電圧(以下、黒電圧とする)であり、液晶印加電圧Voff1<液晶印加電圧Voff2である。また、液晶印加電圧Von1、Von2は、白を表示する際の最大電圧(以下、白電圧とする)であり、液晶印加電圧Von1<液晶印加電圧Von2である。また、図1(b)に示すように、反射型液晶パネル5の液晶に印加する電圧が高くなるのに応じてその輝度が大きくなる。

尚、図1(b)においては、1本の電圧−相対輝度特性カーブを示したが、反射型液晶表示装置1がカラー表示可能な液晶表示装置であれば、図10(b)に示したように、R、G、Bデータそれぞれに対応する3本の電圧−相対輝度特性カーブを持つ。また、図10(b)に示したようにR、G、Bデータの電圧−相対輝度特性カーブは、相対輝度が飽和直前になるとバラツキがでてくる。すなわち、制御部6が、相対輝度の飽和直前まで反射型液晶パネル5に印加する電圧を上げると、反射型液晶表示装置1に表示される白色度が変化する。

以上に示すように、反射型液晶表示装置1は、白電圧(白表示電圧)として、図1(b)に示した液晶印加電圧Von1または液晶印加電圧Von2のいずれかを設定することができる。また、反射型液晶表示装置1は、黒電圧(黒表示電圧)として、図1(b)に示した液晶印加電圧Voff1または液晶印加電圧Voff2のいずれかを設定することができる。

ここで、図1(a)に示した反射型液晶表示装置1の制御部6における黒電圧および白電圧を選択する回路の具体例について説明する。図2は、図1(a)に示した反射型液晶表示装置1の制御部6における黒電圧および白電圧を選択する回路例を示す図である。図2において、10は、セレクタIC(Integrated Circuit)であり、フロントライト点灯判別信号の信号レベルL(ロウ)またはH(ハイ)に応じて、液晶印加電圧Von1または液晶印加電圧Von2を選択して、白輝度の基準電圧(白電圧)として出力する。また、もう1つのセレクタIC・10は、フロントライト点灯判別信号の信号レベルL(ロウ)またはH(ハイ)に応じて、液晶印加電圧Voff1または液晶印加電圧Voff2を選択して、黒輝度の基準電圧(黒電圧)として出力する。

11は、データドライバICであり、セレクタIC・10から供給される黒電圧および白電圧やクロック信号CLKやスタートパルスSPやR(赤)、G(緑)、B(青)データを基に、反射型液晶パネル5のデータバスラインへ240本の駆動電圧信号DB1〜DB240を出力する。具体的には、スタートパルスSPが入力されるとクロック信号CLKに同期したタイミングでR(赤)、G(緑)、B(青)データのラッチを開始して、1ライン分ラッチした後に、黒電圧および白電圧などの基準電圧を基にラッチしたR(赤)、G(緑)、B(青)データをD/A(デジタル/アナログ)変換して駆動電圧信号DB1〜DB240を出力する。すなわち、データドライバIC11は、R、G、Bデータの値が大きい程、大きな電圧値の駆動電圧信号を出力する。尚、駆動電圧信号DB1〜DB240とは、反射型液晶パネル5の各画素を構成する液晶にRGBデータに応じた駆動電圧を印加するための信号である。

以上の構成により、反射型液晶表示装置1は、反射型液晶パネル5の白電圧を2種類設定する。具体的には図1(b)に示したように、R、G、Bデータそれぞれの電圧−相対輝度特性カーブから、おおよそR、G、Bデータの相対輝度が等しい飽和前の電圧値Von1と、R、G、Bデータの相対輝度はずれているが白輝度として最大になる飽和後の電圧値Von2を設定する。また、反射型液晶表示装置1におけるフロントライト3の光源2のオン、オフは、制御部6が行う。例えば反射型液晶表示装置1を備えるPDA(Personal Digital Assistants)や携帯型パソコンなどの携帯型情報端末では、携帯型情報端末が備える手動スイッチ(フロントライト点灯スイッチ)で切り換えを行う。すなわち、この手動スイッチの出力信号を基に、制御部6は、光源2の点灯、消灯を行い、更に、フロントライト点灯判別信号を生成してセレクタIC・10へ入力する。

尚、上述した実施形態において、フロントライト3のオン、オフを外部の手動スイッチに応じて行うことを示したが、この限りではなく、外光の明るさを検知した外光検知信号を得ることができる場合などは、制御部6において、その外光検知信号を基に、光源2の制御およびフロントライト点灯判別信号を生成してもよい。この時、外光の明るさを検知した外光検知信号を出力する外光検知回路は、反射型液晶表示装置1の内部に備えても良いし、反射型液晶表示装置1の外部に設置されていてもよい。

また、フロントライト3の光源2として例えばCCFL(Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp)やLEDを用いる。また、光源2の発光スペクトルの設計方法として、例えば最大輝度の白表示の品質を優先する場合には、液晶印加電圧Von2を印加した時に求める白色度になるように発光スペクトルを設計してもよい。

更に、上述した実施形態において反射型液晶パネル5がノーマリーブラックの場合を説明したが、この限りではなく、反射型液晶パネル5は液晶に電圧がかかっていないときに画面が白いノーマリーホワイトであってもよい。ここで、反射型液晶パネル5がノーマリーホワイトの時は、データドライバIC11は、R、G、Bデータの値が大きいほど小さな電圧値の駆動電圧信号DB1〜DB240を出力する。これにより、図1(b)に示した電圧−輝度特性が左右反対となり、反射型液晶パネル5に印加される電圧が高くなればなるほど相対輝度が暗くなる。また、この時、液晶印加電圧Voff1>Voff2となり液晶印加電圧Von1>液晶印加電圧Von2となる。

以上に説明したように、本実施形態における反射型液晶表示装置1は、フロントライト3の光源2を消灯時(以下、フロントライト3の消灯時とする)は、外光と反射型液晶パネル5の反射特性により白輝度および白色度が決定される。また、反射型液晶表示装置1においてフロントライト3の光源2を点灯時(以下、フロントライト3の点灯時とする)は、フロントライト3の発光スペクトルと反射型液晶パネル5の反射特性により白輝度および白色度が決定される。すなわち、フロントライト3の消灯時は、白色度が外光(太陽光か蛍光灯の光が多い)により白色度が決まってしまう。しかし、白色度の変化量が許容範囲内に収まるような白電圧(Von1)に設定されているため、白色度は許容範囲内でしか変化しないので、良好な色再現性を得ることができる。更に、外光下では明るさが十分あるため、黒電圧(Voff1)に示すように低い電圧とすることで、黒をより黒くすることができ、コントラストのある引き締まった表示が可能となる。

一方、フロントライト3の点灯時には、フロントライト3の発光スペクトルで白色度が決められる。発光スペクトルの決め方は、反射型液晶パネル5において最大輝度の白を表示する白電圧が設定されているため、このときの白色度が良好(中間調の白色度とバランスをとった状態)になるように光源2の発光スペクトルを設定することで白色度調整が可能となる。これにより、反射型液晶表示装置1は、白色度の調整のとれた反射型液晶パネル5において最大の輝度となる白色を表示することができる。

以上に示したように、反射型液晶表示装置1は、フロントライト3を点灯した状態においては、光源2は低消費電力のままでありながら最大の輝度であり良好な色再現範囲をもつ画像を表示することができる。また、反射型液晶表示装置1は、フロントライト3を消灯した状態においては、外光により明るさを得ているので、良好な色再現範囲を確保するよう動作することができ、更に黒を引き締めることができる。

次に、本発明の第2の実施形態における反射型液晶表示装置について説明する。
図3(a)は、本発明の第2の実施形態における反射型液晶表示装置の概略構成を示す図である。尚、図3(a)に示す第2の実施形態における反射型液晶表示装置1aは、図1(a)に示した第1の実施形態における反射型液晶表示装置1とほぼ同じ構成であり、同じ符号を付与したものは同様の機能を有するので説明を省略する。また、図3(a)に示す第2の実施形態における反射型液晶表示装置1aにおいて、図1(a)に示した第1の実施形態における反射型液晶表示装置1と異なる部分は、制御部6aであり、この異なる部分を主に説明する。

制御部6aは、光源2の点灯/消灯や、反射型液晶パネル5の液晶への電圧印加など、反射型液晶表示装置1aが画像情報や文字情報等を表示するための種々の制御を行う。例えば、制御部6aは、上述した制御部6と同様に反射型液晶パネル5の各画素単位で液晶を駆動する駆動信号をデータバスライン経由で供給する。制御部6と異なるのは、制御部6aは、反射型液晶パネル5の液晶に印加する白電圧(駆動電圧の最大値)および黒電圧(駆動電圧の最小値)をテキスト(文字)表示/画像表示に応じて制御する点である。尚、テキスト表示とは、文字情報の表示であり、画像表示とは、図や写真などの画像情報の表示である。

次に、図3(a)に示した反射型液晶パネル5の電圧―輝度特性について説明する。図3(b)は、図3(a)に示した反射型液晶パネル5の電圧−輝度特性を示す図である。尚、図3(b)に示す電圧−輝度特性は、反射型液晶表示装置1aがノーマリーブラックである場合を示している。図3(b)のグラフは、図1(b)に示したグラフと同様に、縦軸は相対輝度であり、横軸は液晶印加電圧である。ここで、図3(b)において図1(b)と異なる部分を以下に示す。図3(b)の液晶印加電圧Voff1、Voff2は、画像表示時かテキスト表示時かによって選択可能な黒電圧であり、液晶印加電圧Von1、Von2は、画像表示時かテキスト表示時かによって選択可能な白電圧である。本実施形態では、画像表示時に液晶印加電圧Voff1および液晶印加電圧Von1を選択し、テキスト表示時に液晶印加電圧Voff2および液晶印加電圧Von2を選択すると、表示品質が向上する。

以上に示したように、テキスト表示と画像表示を比較すると画像表示の方が色再現性能に対する使用者からの要求は高くなるという経験則に応じて、反射型液晶表示装置1aは、画像表示時に色再現性能の確かな白電圧Von1を用いる。また、テキスト表示時には色再現よりも明るさの要求が高くなるという経験則に応じて、反射型液晶表示装置1aは、最大白が出せるような白電圧Von2を用いる。これにより、反射型液晶表示装置1aは、画像表示時では輝度は落ちるものの色再現を良好なものにすることができ、テキスト表示時では、色再現性は落ちるものの明るさを良好なものにすることができる。更に、画像表示時は、コントラストが必要であるため、黒電圧を低くして黒をより黒くすることができる。また、テキスト表示時は、コントラストは重要でなく、むしろ明るさが必要であるため黒電圧を高めにすることができる。

尚、上述した実施形態において、画像/テキスト判別信号の制御を外部の画像/テキスト選択スイッチ16aの操作に応じて行うことを示したが、この限りではなく、表示中のデータが画像データであるかテキストデータであるかを検知して画像/テキスト検知信号を得ることができる場合などは、制御部6aにおいて、その画像/テキスト検知信号を基に、画像/テキスト判別信号を生成してもよい。この時、上述した画像/テキスト検知信号を出力する画像/テキスト検知手段は、反射型液晶表示装置1aの内部に備えても良いし、反射型液晶表示装置1aの外部に設置されていてもよい。更に、上述した実施形態において反射型液晶表示装置1aがノーマリーブラックの場合を説明したが、この限りではなく、第1の実施形態と同様に、反射型液晶表示装置1aはノーマリーホワイトであってもよい。この時、液晶印加電圧Von1>液晶印加電圧Von2となる。

次に、本発明の第3の実施形態における反射型液晶表示装置について説明する。

次に、図5(a)に示した反射型液晶パネル5の電圧―輝度特性について説明する。図5(b)は、図5(a)に示した反射型液晶パネル5の電圧−輝度特性を示す図である。尚、図5(b)に示す電圧−輝度特性は、反射型液晶表示装置1bがノーマリーブラックである場合を示している。図5(b)のグラフは、図1(b)に示したグラフと同様に、縦軸は相対輝度であり、横軸は液晶印加電圧である。ここで、図5(b)において図1(b)と異なる部分を以下に示す。図5(b)の液晶印加電圧Voffは、黒電圧であり、液晶印加電圧Von1、Von2は、画像表示時かテキスト表示時かによって選択可能な白電圧である。本実施形態では、画像表示時かつフロントライト3オン時に液晶印加電圧Von1を選択し光源2bの輝度を第1の輝度とし、画像表示時かつフロントライト3オフ時に液晶印加電圧Von1を選択し光源2bの輝度を第2の輝度とし、テキスト表示時に液晶印加電圧Von2を選択し光源2bの輝度を第2の輝度とすることで、表示品質が向上する。但し、第1の輝度>第2の輝度である。

以上に示したように、反射型液晶表示装置1bは、画像/テキスト判別信号とフロントライト点灯判別信号の2つの信号により、画像表示かつフロントライト点灯の時にLED印加電圧をV1に制御し、それ以外の状態(テキスト表示、画像表示かつフロントライト消灯)の時にはLED印加電圧をV2に制御する。これにより、反射型液晶表示装置1bは、画像表示時には液晶パネルの白レベルはテキスト表示時の白レベルよりも低いものの、フロントライト3の光量がテキスト表示時よりも多くなっているため、画像表示時の白輝度を明るい状態にできる。すなわち、画像表示時に色度を確保するため犠牲にした輝度低下分を、フロントライト3の光源2の光量アップにより補足する。また、使用状況に応じてフロントライト3の光源2の光量を変えるため、消費電力も著しく増大させることなく、画像表示時の輝度を確保できる。

ここで、ガンマ設定1の電圧V0〜V11を生成する回路例について説明する。図9(a)は、ガンマ設定1の電圧V0〜V11を生成する回路例を示す図である。図9(a)において、R1〜R11は、抵抗素子であり、白電圧から黒電圧までの電位差をガンマ設定1に応じて分圧する。このガンマ設定1とは、図9(b)のガンマ設定1の曲線に示すように、入力の変化に対して凸カーブを描くように変化する出力を行う。一般的に、この曲線をガンマカーブと呼び、入力と出力の関係をガンマ特性と呼ぶ。また、ガンマ設定2の場合も、図9(a)と同様の回路構成で、分圧することにより図9(b)に示すガンマ設定2の曲線となるガンマ設定2の電圧V0’〜V11’を出力する。また、図9(b)に示すように、ガンマ設定1は低輝度部分の傾きが大きく黒表示(低輝度部分の表示)を強調しており、ガンマ設定2は高輝度部分の傾きが大きく白表示(高輝度部分の表示)を強調した設定の例である。

ここで、ガンマ設定1およびガンマ設定2の設定方法および制御部6cの動作について説明する。例えば、明るい環境下では、白輝度は十分であると予想され、黒表示を強調した表示にして高コントラストな表示を実現するため、ガンマ設定1を用いる。また、明るい環境なのでPDA15c本体のフロントライト点灯スイッチ18aが「切」であり、フロントライト3が消灯していることを示すフロントライト点灯判別信号がガンマ値切換部20へ入力される。これにより、ガンマ値切換部20は、ガンマ設定1の電圧V1〜V11を選択してガンマ設定値VA0〜VA11として出力する。これによって、階調電圧生成部11eは、ガンマ設定値VA0〜VA11に応じた図9(b)のガンマ設定1に示すように変化する階調電圧VB0〜VB63を出力する。これにより、D/A変換部11dは、ガンマ設定1に設定された階調電圧VB0〜VB63を基準電圧として、ラッチ部11cから入力されるR、G、BデータをD/A変換して駆動電圧信号DB1〜DB240を出力する。

一方、暗い環境下でフロントライト3を点灯した場合は、白輝度は十分な輝度まで得られないことが多い。この場合は、白表示を強調した表示にして明るい表示を実現するよう、ガンマ設定2を用いる。また、暗い環境なのでPDA15c本体のフロントライト点灯スイッチ18aが「入」であり、フロントライト3が点灯していることを示すフロントライト点灯判別信号がガンマ値切換部20へ入力される。これにより、ガンマ値切換部20は、ガンマ設定2の電圧V1’〜V11’を選択してガンマ設定値VA0〜VA11として出力する。これによって、階調電圧生成部11eは、ガンマ設定値VA0〜VA11に応じた図9(b)のガンマ設定2に示すように変化する階調電圧VB0〜VB63を出力する。これにより、D/A変換部11dは、ガンマ設定2に設定された階調電圧VB0〜VB63を基準電圧として、ラッチ部11cから入力されるR、G、BデータをD/A変換して駆動電圧信号DB1〜DB240を出力する。

以上に説明したように、本発明による反射型液晶表示装置においては、フロントライトの点灯状態を示すフロントライト点灯判別信号に応じて、反射型液晶パネルに印加する白表示電圧を制御できるので、例えば、液晶画面が全体的に明るさの足りなくなることが多いフロントライト点灯時に、白表示電圧を高めに制御して画面の輝度をより明るくすることが出来る。すなわち、使用状況に応じたより高品質な表示を実現することができる。
