The method involves providing the environment information that is based on a two-dimensional environment map, which includes object base surfaces (11). The objects are shown disposed on the object base surfaces. The representation of the objects is based on additional information. The additional information is derived from the basic characteristics of object base surfaces. The characteristics of object base surfaces comprise the location of the objects, particularly the local proximity of object base surfaces to a city or to a town center. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a navigation system has a display; and (2) a computer program with program code element.
