Campo tecnico Technical field
The present invention relates to a process for the production of protected oxidizable metal particles in crystallized solid matrices and related products.
Arte nota Known art
The oxidizable particles can be composed of one or more organic substances, one or more inorganic substances or any combination of these in the form of a composite, and have the ability to oxidize. The oxidizable metal particles are metal particles composed of inorganic substance, preferably consisting of a single metal element, preferably zero-valent, and may contain a limited percentage by weight of their oxides and hydroxides, preferably less than 5% and preferably located in the external part of the structure , strongly capable of oxidizing and therefore reducing other substances in contact [1]. Metal particles are used in various fields of industry, by way of non-exhaustive example of processes, pharmaceuticals, electronics, optics, dyes, medicine and the environment [2-5]. The metal particles of industrial interest are both those of the metals of the first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth groups and those of the transition metals, by way of non-exhaustive example: Fe, Cd, Ni, Ag, Al, Au, Cr, Zn, Mn, Co, Cu, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ir, Ru, Os, W, Tc, Re, Nb, Mo, V, Ta, Zr, Y, Hf and Sc. Metal particles can be synthesized through physical, chemical, biological processes or a combination thereof. The physical process is often based on one of the following methods: from top-down production methods, starting from metal precursor blocks, through a dimensional reduction in mills; condensation of a vapor phase of the atomized metal on a condensing surface; by thermal decomposition, in flame, in plasma or within an electric arc [6]. The chemical process is based on the chemical reduction of a metal precursor, in ionic form and in liquid solution as dissolved solute, in the zero-valent state, and subsequent chemical precipitation [7]. The biological process is based on extra or intracellular synthesis of non-toxic metal particles by bacteria, fungi or other microorganisms placed in liquid solution, in which the metal precursor is present in ionic form [8,9]. At present, the most used production process is that of chemical reduction in liquid solution, preferably in aqueous solution, this being the simplest, cheapest and fastest method compared to other chemical, physical and biological processes [6]. An example of the production of nanoparticles, in particular of zero-valent iron, is reported by Ponder et al. 2000 [10], which use sodium borohydride (NaBH4) in basic solution as reducing agent and as precursor of Fe and source of ferrous ions in hydroalcoholic solution (70% water V / V and 30% ethanol V / V) ferrous sulphate heptahydrate ( FeSO4 7H2O). The nanomaterial thus produced is in a colloidal solution, and to avoid rapid oxidation and deactivation by oxidizing agents in the environment, it must be protected from substances called caping in solution, in a protected atmosphere or through a coating. In the literature there are several works dealing with coatings for particles used in the biomedical, industrial and environmental fields [11]. Among the various organic compounds used for the coating, some polymers and biopolymers have long been known, such as for example cellulose carboxy methylate [12], PVP [13], gum arabic [14], sodium alginate [15 ] except for others. The main purpose of these coatings lies in making the colloidal dispersion of the particles produced more stable, demonstrating, however, only partial protective capacity against oxidation. Some of these compounds are also used to reduce the toxicity of certain particles towards certain classes of microorganisms present in the fields of use. The cellulose carboxy methylated biopolymer, for example, acts as a steric / electrostatic dispersant, through the formation of branched carbon chains that are deposited on the surface of the nanoparticles [16]. The nanoparticles inserted in this structure show a reduced contact with the cellular barriers of microorganisms, preserving their integrity [16]. On the other hand, this type of structure cannot prevent the diffusion of oxidants and therefore does not protect the nanoparticles from their deactivation. Furthermore, the coating is difficult to remove and consequently the action of the metal nanoparticles is strongly inhibited as their action can only manifest itself through diffusion processes through the protective layer.
Since the coatings developed so far are not able to effectively isolate the particles from the external environment, other authors have proposed the use of some compounds in solution for the protection of suspended nanoparticles (caping). For example, the use of some natural compounds has been proposed, such as polyphenols from tea leaves (Moulton et al [17]), useful both in the production phase and in protection from the oxidation of zero-valent silver nanoparticles. . In this way, the nanoparticles produced are stable and chemically active, without undergoing oxidation by the oxygen dissolved in the solution. In another study [16] polyphenols extracted from tea leaves and coffee were used to produce and protect zero valent iron nanoparticles; these nanoparticles were then used for the dehalogenation of organic compounds in synthetic liquid wastewater, showing however lower efficiency than similar particles produced with inorganic reducing agents (NaBH4 and Na2S2O4). Although this protective method is effective in the short term, it does not guarantee high shelf-life.
Finally, the applicative use of particles involves the simultaneous introduction of caping substances into the application system, which would also cause an increase in the amount of organic carbon in the reaction medium.
Another study developed protection of zero valent iron nanoparticles in the gel state [18], using a sodium alginate bed, subsequently used for the removal of nitrates from groundwater. The encapsulation process is the subject of US patent application 20160031766.
Other authors have used inorganic protective coatings by chemical reaction. By way of example, one of these is Tetraethyl Ortosilicate, which is used to coat numerous nanoparticles [19] and is able to stabilize them, making them however inert from a chemical point of view.
For their use in the field it is necessary to use chemical disintegrating agents that are able to dissolve the silicate coating. These agents consist mainly of concentrated hydrofluoric and nitric acid mixtures which require additional costs and precautions in their use. Different types of clays, from the less plastic and less active ones, such as kaolin [20], to the more active ones, such as bentonite [21], have been used, for example, to support and stabilize zero valent iron nanoparticles. In both cases the suspension was stable, but this did not make the nanoparticles protected from the attack of oxygen dissolved in solution.
The need is therefore felt to obtain oxidizable metal particles, which are protected from external oxidizing agents, which can be stored for prolonged periods of time and made quickly available for use.

The coating matrix according to the invention is a matrix obtained by the growth of a solid crystallized from one or more solutes dissolved in solution; all fluorides, chlorides, sulphates, phosphates, iodides, bromides and acetates of metals and semi-metals are considered as solutes, in particular by way of non-exhaustive example Na, K, Li, Be, Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba, as well as all organic solutes, in particular by way of non-exhaustive example fructose, maltose, dextrose.
According to the invention, the range of variation of the mass ratio between metal particles and crystallized solid is between 0.5% and 90%, preferably between 1.0% and 60.0%, more preferably between 2.0% and 30% even more preferably between 3.5% and 5.0%.
The metal particles remain dispersed or are incorporated in the form of non-cohesive agglomerates in the crystal, which in turn are sufficiently dispersed among themselves.
The metal particles protected according to the invention can be stored in any condition as long as they are not in contact with one or more solvents of the crystallized solid.
The crystallized solid matrix can be dissolved with one or more of its solvents, preferably water.
Thanks to the use of a process of coating the particles with crystallized solids, it is possible to obtain a covering that maintains the oxidability of the particles themselves, providing them with protection throughout the storage period until their use. The oxidation of the particles is preserved and made available through the simple dissolution of the protective layer.
The oxidizable zero-valent particles according to the invention remain protected from external oxidizing agents and there is no difference in their oxidation measured immediately after their production and after 210 days of exposure to air. The particles according to the invention find application in the industrial or environmental field (in particular for the remediation of soil, solid, aqueous wastewater, industrial wastewater). By way of example, the particles according to the invention are used for the remediation of organic pollutants in the soil by in-situ techniques, for the elimination of organic or metal pollutants from wastewater and / or groundwater by means of reduction / adsorption processes on support in contact with the medium to be treated, by way of example the particles according to the invention have been used successfully for the removal of a stable organic pollutant such as phenol in solution.
The particles are also used in heterogeneous industrial catalysis processes and are also used in paints, in particular in protective paints.
The present invention also relates to a process for the production of zero-valent and oxidizable metal particles according to the invention. This process is carried out in a liquid solution in two main phases, the second of which consists of the protection of the oxidizable metal particles by coating and incorporating them into a crystallized solid matrix, the crystallization of which takes place on the surface of said metal particles which, after their production, constitute a trigger in the secondary nucleation process of the solute added during the second phase of the process. Nucleation represents the first step in the crystallization process, which consists in the transition of a solute from a dissolved phase to a solid phase in the solvent. When this transition is made possible by the operating conditions, the solute spontaneously forms small nuclei giving rise to nucleation. The process is favored in the presence of surfaces or particles available in solution, also introduced by sowing, giving rise to a preferential form of nucleation called heterogeneous.
The process is therefore characterized by two successive phases: (1) synthesis of the metal particles in solution; (2) crystallization by heterogeneous nucleation of the solute on the particles produced, with seeding function.
Both phases are characterized by a crystallization process, which is a unitary operation through which a crystalline solid phase is obtained starting from one or more substances in solution dissolved in the liquid phase which solidify by virtue of their higher concentration compared to that of balance. The crystallization according to the invention is exclusively the crystallization from the liquid phase, and not from the melt.
In crystallization from a liquid solution, the fundamental parameter is the solubility of the selected solute, which depends on the operating temperature T (° C), on the solute considered and on the selected solvent, which represents the concentration of the solute in the saturated solution, i.e. at the equilibrium in function of T. Depending on whether the dissolution of the solute in the solvent is endothermic or exothermic, the solubility can increase or decrease with the T. If the concentration of the solute in solution is higher than the equilibrium one at the selected T, i.e. it is higher than the value of solubility, the solution is said to be oversaturated.
The relative saturation S is equal to the ratio between the effective concentration of the solute in solution and the equilibrium concentration at the T of the system. Supersaturated solutions are characterized by S> 1.
I metalli secondo l’invenzione sono preferibilmente appartenenti ai gruppi II, III, IV, V e VI e agli elementi di transizione della tavola periodica, a titolo di esempio non esaustivo Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Sc, Y, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Re, Fe, Ru, Os, Co, Rh, Ir, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag, Au, Zn, Cd, Hg, Al, Ga, In, Tl, Ge, Sn, Pb, Sb, Bi. During step (1) the oxidizable metal particles are synthesized. The metals according to the invention preferably belong to groups II, III, IV, V and VI and to the transition elements of the periodic table, by way of non-exhaustive example Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Sc, Y, Ti , Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Re, Fe, Ru, Os, Co, Rh, Ir, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag, Au, Zn, Cd, Hg , Al, Ga, In, Tl, Ge, Sn, Pb, Sb, Bi.
In questa prima fase è necessario selezionare almeno un composto precursore contenente almeno un catione metallico; In this first step it is necessary to select at least one precursor compound containing at least one metal cation;
Metal compounds such as for example an oxide or a salt are preferably used as precursors; the fluorides, chlorides, sulfates, phosphates, iodides, bromides and acetates of the above metals are preferred.
The selected precursor is dissolved in a solution of one or more of its solvents, preferably polar, still more preferably water, still more preferably ultrapure degassed water; Regarding the solvents to be used, it is possible to operate with both polar and non-polar solvents, in particular inorganic and organic, preferably H2O, H2SO4, H3PO4, HBr, HF, HI, HCl, CH3COOH, CH3OH.
The precursor of the metal must be in a maximum concentration equal to that of equilibrium at the T of the system, preferably below 10% by mass, much more preferably between 0.2% by mass and 4% by mass. To this solution is added a reducing agent of the metal precursor preferably in a concentration higher than the stoichiometric one; for example, a second solution of the reducing agent of the metal precursor is prepared in the same solvent, preferably in a concentration higher than the stoichiometric one. Sodium borohydride, lithium borohydride, hydrazine monohydrate can be used as a reducing agent by way of non-exhaustive example.
A dispersing agent, such as cellulose carboxy methylate or surfactant, such as Tween60, Tween20, sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium lauryl ether sulfate, can also be added to the precursor solution in order to further promote dispersion of the precursor and particles produced after reaction.
This agent is added in concentrations from 0.01% by mass to 10.00% by mass, preferably from 0.1% by mass to 1.0% by mass, even more preferably from 0.25% by mass to 0.75% by mass, and must be soluble in the solvent.
The two solutions are placed in contact in a reactor with controlled atmosphere, pressure and T, at a pressure and temperature such as to guarantee the maintenance of the liquid state of the solution, preferably at ambient pressure and temperature, under mixing conditions, preferably under conditions of micro-mixing, micro-mixing is defined as diffusive mixing on the characteristic Batchelor scale and below the Kolmogorov scale. Micro-mixing occurs through three main mechanisms: laminar elongation to complete striation, turbulent erosion and molecular contraction / diffusion. Micro-mixing homogenizes the reacting species and allows chemical reactions on a molecular scale; the reaction preferably takes place in an atmosphere of inert gas, preferably nitrogen or noble gas, to reduce the probability of possible oxidation of the metal particles.
Following the contact of the two solutions, a reaction of chemical reduction of the cation takes place, followed by the formation of the particles, preferably nanoparticles, zerovalent metal which are oxidizable; therefore such particles in the presence of oxidizing agents or in the presence of any electron acceptor increase their oxidation state to a value higher than and different from 0.
The particles are formed at such a concentration higher than the equilibrium concentration in the solvent, with S> 1.00, preferably S> 100, even more preferably S> 1000.
Phase (2) of the process involves the growth of a crystallized solid starting from a solute selected to create the covering to be crystallized on the metal particles obtained at the end of phase (1).
To proceed to step (2) of the process, which takes place in a crystallizer, it is necessary to use a solute having, with respect to the metal precursor, a different cation and the same or different anion, which is inert with respect to the oxidizable metal particles produced and which is soluble in the solvent of phase (1), under the operating conditions of the crystallizer. As solute to be crystallized, all solutes such as fluorides, chlorides, sulphates, phosphates, iodides, bromides and acetates of metals and semi-metals are considered, in particular by way of non-exhaustive example Na, K, Li, Be, Mg, Ca , Sr and Ba, as well as all organic solutes, in particular by way of non-exhaustive example fructose, maltose, dextrose.
During step (2), a crystallizer is carried out under controlled pressure, atmosphere and temperature, preferably under the conditions of step (1) but which can also differ in one or more parameters, by heterogeneous nucleation, of a solute on the previously produced particles and added to the crystallizer in solution, which take on the function of seeding. The amount of solute added, in the homogenization mixing conditions, must be such as to generate a saturated or undersaturated environment, preferably S = 0.9-1.0, in any case the dissolved solute must be in a concentration at S> = 0.00, preferably at S> 0.90, even more preferably at S> 0.99 under the operating conditions of the crystallizer. Once the solute has completely dissolved in the solvent, the operating conditions of the crystallizer are changed, to generate a supersaturated environment with an S value that falls within the metastability range of the solution, preferably S <10, more preferably S <2, in order to promote the growth of the solute on sowing.
It is also possible to carry out the operation of adding the solute to crystallize already during phase (1), provided that it is inert towards the precursor and the reducing agent, and that it does not crystallize under the operating conditions of phase (1).
Crystallization according to the invention is a heterogeneous crystallization which can occur by variation of T, by variation of P (by evaporation of the solvent) or by removal of the solvent or by other methods such as for example through selective membranes, or even by variation of more operating parameters.
The crystallization process can take place, for example, by a decrease in temperature in the case of an endothermic solute; in this case the initial temperature T2 is selected and a quantity of solute is dissolved until equilibrium is reached at this T2; crystallization occurs by cooling the solution from T2 to T3 <T2. At the new temperature T3 the solubility of the solute will be lower than that which was at the temperature T2 so that the excess solute will tend to crystallize. Crystallization can also be operated at constant T by reducing the operating pressure until boiling, in such a way as to evaporate the solvent, increase the concentration of solute beyond that of equilibrium such as to induce crystallization on sowing. This can also be achieved through selective membranes with high rejection towards the solute, capable of separating the solvent from the solution at constant T and P. Furthermore, it is possible to perform crystallization through the combination of the two methods T and P.
In all the cases reported here as an example, the crystallization process described involves the initiation and operation of a heterogeneous nucleation, as the particles constitute the sowing or the trigger for the subsequent growth of the solute crystals. As for the temperature and pressure ranges to be used, the range 0-100 ° C is considered if you work at atmospheric pressure and therefore by crystallization by cooling, the range 0-1 atm and 0-100 are consequently considered. ° C if working by evaporation or adiabatic crystallization; in adiabatic crystallization, the temperature of the solution is naturally reduced as a result of the evaporation of the solvent and the removal of the relative heat from the solution as heat of vaporization.
After the crystallization process, the protected particles according to the invention can be stored in the solid state or in the mother solution or in other liquid solution in which the coating matrix is not soluble.
The mother solution can therefore be separated from the crystals produced, by means of separation techniques preferably chosen from continuous centrifugation, discontinuous centrifugation, continuous filtration, discontinuous filtration or by sedimentation, depending on the average size of the crystals. The size of the separated crystals is certainly greater than that of sowing, preferably greater than 100 nm. The product obtained, once separated from the liquid solution, will be divided into different crystals whose number and size distribution is a function of the reaction medium, rotation speed of the mixer used, fluid dynamic conditions, growth time, operating conditions and type of solute and solvent, presenting in their crystallized matrix the oxidizable metal particles, which will consequently be coated / incorporated and protected from oxidizing agents in the environment, both inside and outside the reaction medium. The final product can therefore be preserved both in the solid state and in the solid state in solution. Below is a diagram of the process according to the invention.
Therefore, the subject of the present invention is a process that includes the following basic steps:
(1) Prepare an aqueous solution of at least one precursor compound under the conditions of temperature and pressure in which the compound is close to saturation, i.e. S <1, preferably below 10% by mass, much more preferably between 0.2% by mass mass and 4% by mass, wherein the precursor compound contains at least one metal cation; put said solution in contact with a reducing agent, preferably added in quantities greater than the stoichiometric one or with a solution of the reducing agent in the same solvent as the solution of the precursor compound.
Far reagire detta soluzione preferibilmente in atmosfera di gas inerte, preferibilmente azoto a dare particelle metalliche zerovalenti. Let said solution react preferably in an atmosphere of inert gas, preferably nitrogen to give zerovalent metal particles.
(2) Put in contact an aliquot of the solution of step (1) comprising the zerovalent metal particles with a solute compound having, with respect to the precursor compound, a different cation and the same or different anion, which is inert with respect to the metal particles produced and which is soluble in the solvent of step (1). The amount of solute added must be such as to generate a saturated or undersaturated environment, that is S≤1.
Once the complete dissolution of the solute has been obtained, change the operating conditions to generate a supersaturated environment designed to promote the growth of the solute on the metal particles. The particles obtained are coated / incorporated in the crystallized solid matrix, maintaining their basic chemical-physical characteristics and being completely protected from external oxidizing agents, such as atmospheric or environmental oxidizing gases and liquids in which there are oxidizing agents and in which the solute of coating is not soluble.
Thanks to the use of a coating process with crystallized solutes on the particles, it is possible to obtain a covering that maintains their oxidability unaltered, providing them with protection during the entire storage period up to their use in the field of use: industrial or environmental. . The activity of the particles is preserved and made available through the simple dissolution of the protective layer.
The advantages of the present invention are numerous and are listed below:
3. The coating protects the particles from their oxidation during the storage and transport phase, immediately upon their production.
The thickness of the protective layer and the dissolution kinetics in the specific solvent determine the release time of the nanoparticles, which can therefore be suitably designed for controlled release applications, both in terms of time and space (carrying).

ESEMPI EXAMPLES
Preparazione di nanoparticelle di ferro zerovalente protette in matrice di carbossi metilato di cellulosa. Preparation of zero-valent iron nanoparticles protected in a cellulose carboxy methylate matrix.
As a non-exhaustive example, zero-valent iron nanoparticles (hereinafter nZVI) have been considered, which are synthesized in the laboratory by chemical reaction between a precursor of ferrous ions and a reducing agent (sodium borohydride). Cellulose carboxy methylate (hereinafter CMC) is used as the dispersing agent. These particles are made up of a metallic iron core and an outer shell of mixed valence iron oxides, mainly magnetite. Figure 1 shows a photo of the nZVI in CMC matrix. The figure, shown here in shades of gray, is supported by a color analysis in terms of RGB on a specific representative point of the photographed sample (RGB, additive color model: the colors are defined as the sum of the three colors Red ( Red), Green (Green) and Blue (Blue), each on a scale of 0-255). As can be seen from the image, the nanoparticles are dispersed in the form of colloid and are typically dark black (low RGB values on all three color channels). Following production, the nZVI are susceptible to oxidation by the oxygen dissolved in solution and by what can dissolve from the atmosphere. The rapid and complete oxidation of nZVI once left in a container open to air can be clearly seen from figure 2. In fact, from the figure it is possible to observe the typical red-brown color of oxidized ferric ions (RGB values typical of color red-brown, with value on the relevant R channel and G value equal to 1/10).
Figure 3 shows the SEM image of the nZVI. These nanoparticles are incorporated in the organic matrix of CMC in the form of nanometric aggregates, with minimum dimensions of 40-50 nm per single particle.
The process object of the invention applied to the case of nZVI has been designed according to the following parameters: concentration of the precursor FeSO4 7H2O = 10.9 g / L, concentration of sodium borohydride NaBH4 = 2.96 g / L (molar ratio 2: 1 borohydride: iron sulphate, stoichiometric with respect to reaction (1), taken from [22]), concentration of CMC = 2.4 g / L, initial temperature T1 = 25 ° C, Total volume of solution = 100 mL, solvent selected ultrapure water, rate of turbine rotation (4.5 cm diameter of the “flat six blades” type) equal to 900 rpm
Nota la massa di soluto necessaria per il rivestimento delle particelle, si determina, attraverso le leggi di solubilità del soluto in soluzione acquosa (equazioni 2 e 3), la temperatura a cui va eseguita la dissoluzione del soluto (T2) e la concentrazione di saturazione dello <stesso.>Depending on these parameters and using a 250 mL volume vessel and jacketed to keep the temperature constant throughout the process, it is possible to obtain a concentration of nanoparticles equal to 2 g / L, being the process yield equal to 91.4%, measured according to [23]. As a function of the mass of Fe (0) to be coated (0.2 g), the mass of solute to crystallize to be used can be calculated. As previously reported, the metal particles / solute ratio must preferably be in the range of 3.5-5% by mass. In this case a ratio of 4.5% was selected, from which a mass of solute to crystallize equal to about 4.5 g is obtained. Potassium sulphate was selected as solute for crystallization, in accordance with what was previously reported about the possible salts to be used. Once the mass of solute necessary for the coating of the particles is known, the temperature at which the dissolution of the solute is to be performed (T2) and the saturation concentration are determined through the solubility laws of the solute in aqueous solution (equations 2 and 3). of the <same.>
From equation 2, the saturation concentration of K2SO4 at 25 ° C, equal to 121 g / L, is calculated, so considering a solution volume equal to 100 mL, the mass of solubilized solute is determined, equal to 12.1 g. To this mass are added the 4.5 g necessary for the coating of the nZVI, obtaining 16.6 g, that is 166 g / L in terms of concentration. By substituting this value in equation 3, a T2 = 50 ° C is obtained. After identifying all the parameters of the process, the experiment was carried out.
Figure 4 shows the nZVI incorporated in the solute. From this figure it is clear that the nZVI are incorporated into the crystal in the form of non-cohesive agglomerates and in the order of microns, which in turn are sufficiently dispersed among themselves.
Following the crystallization by cooling, which took place by reducing the T to 25 ° C, immediately after the complete solubilization of the solute at 50 ° C and controlling the temperature of the solution with a thermocouple, the material obtained was separated by filtration, on filter paper. Whatman 450 nm and left to air dry. As can be seen from Figure 5 which shows the XRD spectrum of the nZVI coated by the solute, metallic iron is still present in the material as a result of the coating process, in addition to the solute potassium sulphate and magnetite (always present on the external surface of the nZVI) . Figure 6 instead shows the SEM image of the post-coating nZVI.
Test di efficienza delle nZVI. NZVI efficiency test.
The remaining part was ground to increase the surface exposed to the air, and left at ambient temperature and pressure in contact with the air. After 30 days, the material was used again in the Cr (VI) reduction process to test its efficiency. 5 tests were performed in triplicate (the average value of each Cr (VI) measurement was reported below) for the reduction of Cr (VI), setting an initial concentration of Cr (VI) equal to 58 mg / L, having used K2CrO4 potassium chromate as precursor and employing a fixed concentration of pure potassium sulphate (blank test) equal to 800 mg / L and four increasing concentrations of coated Fe (0), equal to 800, 1600, 2000, 2400 mg / L, which, depending on the Fe (0) / solute mass ratio selected equal to 4.5%, corresponded to 36, 72, 90 and 108 mg / L of Fe (0). The tests, lasting 4 hours, provided for a measurement of Cr (VI), through the colorimetric method of diphenylcarbazide [24], every 60 min. In particular, 300 mL containers were used with 250 mL of Cr (VI) solution, in which the quantities of coated Fe (0) were dissolved to reach the previously reported concentrations, conducting the experiments without inert gases. The choice of the quantities of coated Fe (0) and consequently of Fe (0) were selected considering the reduction reaction of Cr (VI) by Fe (0) reported in equation 4 [25]:
According to which the stoichiometric molar ratio Fe (0) / Cr (VI) is equal to 1.5. Consequently, two tests were conducted with a molar ratio lower than the stoichiometric one (800 and 1600 mg / L), a test with a molar ratio approximately equal to the stoichiometric one (2000 mg / L) and one with a molar ratio higher than the stoichiometric one (2400 mg /L). Figures 7A and 7B show the comparison of the reduction efficiency of Cr (VI) in aqueous solution of potassium chromate of coated nZVI, used immediately after the process and after 30 days of storage in the air. As can be seen from the graph, the removal efficiency increases as the amount of solute dissolved in solution increases; in particular with tests at 2000 mg / L (molar ratio approximately equal to the stoichiometric one) a reduction efficiency of more than 80% is obtained, while with a slightly higher quantity a complete reduction is obtained. There are no significant differences in the efficiency of the process by comparing the results obtained with the coated nZVI used immediately after production and with those left in the air for 30 days. The particles were re-analyzed for their activity after 210 days of storage. The previously found results have been reconfirmed, as the particles remain protected from external oxidizing agents and there was no difference in their oxidizability, which remains unchanged as that measured immediately after their production.
Capacità di rimozione del fenolo in soluzione. Ability to remove phenol in solution.
Different concentrations (800, 1600, 2000 or 2400 mg / L) of the product described above were used for the removal of phenol (C6H5OH) in a concentration of 25 mg / L in aqueous solution. Figures 8 (A) and 8 (B) show the phenol removal efficiency data as the concentration of the newly produced material varies and after 30 days of storage in the air. The particles are able to remove more than 50% of the phenol concentration at the maximum concentration (2400 mg / L of product) and there are no significant differences in the efficiency of the phenol removal process in solution by comparing the results obtained with the nZVI used immediately after production, with those obtained with nZVI subjected to 30 days of exposure to air. Even at low concentrations (1600 mg / L of product) and after 30 days of storage in the air, the particles are able to remove over 30% of the phenol in solution.
