Abstract

1412586 Wired broadcasting systems COMMUNICATIONS PATENTS Ltd 7 Nov 1972 [25 Nov 1971] 54822/71 Heading H4R A broadcasting system of the type disclosed in Specification 1,272,594 has associated therewith a central data processing station 24, e.g. a computer, which communicates with the subscriber stations 8-15 by feeding binary shift data signals into vision circuits at a frequency outside that used for the vision transmission and the signals are transmitted to every sub. scriber station via their respective twisted pair of high frequency conductors. The signals are modified at each subscriber station and are fed, doubled in frequency, via a buffer and the interstitial pair of control wires back to a programme exchange where the signals for groups of 28 subscribers are fed in tdm. manner back to the central data processing station 24, via continuously driven switches 27, 28 and cables 25, 26 connecting each programme exchange with the central data processing station. Each exchange has 12 groups of 28 subscribers and the cables 25, 26 may be 12 pair cables or each group of 28 subscribers may be allotted a carrier frequency on a single cable. A group identification label is added to each returning data message at the programme exchange before multiplexing. The arrangement may be used for billing purposes, for determining which programme a subscriber is watching, for educational purposes, i.e. to enable a subscriber to freeze the picture in a visual teaching system, &c. An overriding alarm facility to warn of damage to the cable in burglary or fire may be provided which operates automatically if a subscriber station fails to respond to a data message. 40808/2 CLAIMS :
1. A wired broadcasting system in which each of a group of subscribers stations is connected to a programme exchange through a signal path which comprises a twisted pair of conductors suitable for the transmission of high frequency television signals having associated therewith an intersticial pair of conductors suitable for the transmission of audio frequency and control signals for controlling switch means at the programme exchange whereby a subscriber may apply to his high frequency conductor pair any of a number of programmes comprising a central information processing equipment arranged to apply data signals to each programme channel so that each of the subscriber stations receives the same data signals, means associated with each of the subscriber stations for modifying data signals received from said central equipment, and means for returning the individual modified data signals from the subscriber stations to the central processing station.
2. A wired broadcasting system as claimed in claim 1 wherein separate signals paths are provided for returning information or data from each programme exchange to the central data station.
3. A wired broadcasting system as claimed in claim 2, wherein the return signal paths between the programme exchange and central data station are shared between a plurality of subscriber stations each of which is arranged to be connected thereto in sequence.
4. A wired broadcasting system as claimed in any one of the preceding claims which includes means for transmitting the information or data as binary representative frequency shift signals .
5. A wired broadcasting system as claimed in claim 4, wherein the frequency of said signals is arranged to lie outside the frequency band or bands occupied by vision signals on the trunk and subscriber circuits.
6. A wired broadcasting system as claimed in any on© of the preceding claims, wherein the transmission of information or data is effected by the repeated transmission of a train of signals.
7. A wired broadcasting system as claimed in claim 6, wherein said signals are modified by information or data responsive equipment at each subscriber s.tation. n
8. A wired broadcasting system as claimed in claim 7» wherein means are provided at each subscriber station-to store information or data signals received from the central data station until a signal path is available for returning said stored information in modified form to said central data station. i' n
9. A wired broadcasting system as clajimed in claim 4 or any one of claims 5 to 8 when apendant thereto, wherein the frequency shift signals have frequencies of 110 KHz and IkO KHz respectively.
10. A wired broadcasting system as claimed in claim 9» wherein the information or data equipment at the .subscriber station is effective to double the frequency of the data signals · prior to their return to the central data station.
11. A wired broadcasting system substantially as described
