Claims (43)

1. An ultrasound probe, comprising: a housing comprising a piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element and a cooling system, wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element is configured to direct defocused ultrasound energy without a lens to a tissue below a skin surface, wherein the housing is connected via a cable with a connector to a control system, wherein the control system is configured to operate the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element at one or more energy levels, wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element is positioned in the housing, wherein the housing is configured for acoustic coupling to the skin surface, wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element is configured for delivery of the defocused ultrasound energy to heat the tissue below the skin surface to a temperature of greater than 60 degrees Celsius, wherein the tissue comprises one or more selected from the group consisting of: an epidermis tissue, a dermis tissue, a fat tissue, and cellulite, wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element delivers the defocused ultrasound energy at a frequency between 2 MHz to 25 MHz, wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element forms a thermal lesion for treating the tissue, and wherein the cooling system is configured to cool the skin surface at the housing configured for acoustic coupling to the skin surface, wherein the control system is configured to operate the cooling system to control the cooling the skin surface.
2. The ultrasound probe of claim 1, wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element is configured to deliver the defocused ultrasound energy at a depth below the skin surface, wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element comprises at least one of the group consisting of a lead zirconate titanate, a ceramic, a crystal, a plastic, and a composite material.
3. The ultrasound probe of claim 1, further comprising an acoustic coupler between the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element and the skin surface, wherein the acoustic coupler comprises at least one of the group consisting of a fluid, a gel, and a solid.
4. The ultrasound probe of claim 1, wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element is configured to be connected to a control system and a power system, wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element is housed on the housing.
5. The ultrasound probe of claim 1, further comprising: an array of piezoelectric ultrasound therapy elements, and an EEPROM to store and record probe identification and usage history, wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element is configured to deliver the ultrasound energy at a depth below the skin surface, and wherein the tissue comprises the dermis.
6. The ultrasound probe of any one of claims 1-5, further comprising an EEPROM to store and record probe identification and usage history, wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element is configured to direct the defocused ultrasound at a depth below the skin surface, wherein the depth is up to 10 mm below the skin surface.

The ultrasound probe of any one of claims 1-5, further comprising a motion mechanism, wherein the motion mechanism is configured for movement of the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element to form a plurality of thermal lesions at a depth in a region of interest, wherein the depth is up to 10 mm below the skin surface.
8. The ultrasound probe of any one of claims 1-5, wherein the tissue is the dermis.
9. An ultrasound probe, comprising: a housing comprising a piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element and a cooling system, wherein the housing is connected via a cable with a connector to a control system, wherein the control system is configured to operate the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element at one or more energy levels, wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element is configured to provide unfocused thermal heating without a lens in a tissue at a depth below a skin surface, wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element is configured for acoustic coupling to the skin surface, wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element is configured for delivery of ultrasound energy to heat the tissue below the skin surface to a temperature of greater than degrees Celsius, wherein the tissue comprises a dermis tissue or cellulite, wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element forms a thermal lesion at the depth for treating the tissue at the dermis tissue and at least the portion of the dermis tissue or cellulite, and wherein the cooling system is configured to cool the skin surface at the housing configured for acoustic coupling to the skin surface, wherein the control system is configured to operate the cooling system to control the cooling the skin surface.
10. The ultrasound probe of claim 9 wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element delivers the ultrasound energy at a frequency between 2 MHz to 25 MHz.
11. The ultrasound probe of any one of claims 9-10, further comprising a storage system, an interface configured for connection to a power system, and a control system comprising a communication device and a processor, wherein the storage system comprises a probe identification and a probe usage history.

The ultrasound probe of any one of claims 9 and 11, further comprising: an array of piezoelectric ultrasound therapy elements, and a cooling system configured to cool the skin surface, wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element is configured for connection to a control wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element delivers the ultrasound energy at a frequency between 2 MHz to 25 MHz, wherein the depth is up to 10 mm below the skin surface, wherein the thermal lesion tightens the tissue.
13. The ultrasound probe of any one of claims 9-10, further comprising a housing containing a piezoelectric ultrasound imaging element, wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound imaging element is configured for imaging a region of interest under the skin surface, wherein the region of interest comprises the tissue.
14. An ultrasound probe, comprising: a probe housing configured for acoustic coupling to a skin surface, wherein the probe housing comprises at least one piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element and a cooling system, wherein the housing is connected via a cable with a connector to a control system, wherein the control system is configured to operate the at least one piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element at one or more energy levels, wherein the at least one piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element is configured for delivery of ultrasound energy at a temperature greater than 60°C to treat at least a portion of a tissue, wherein the tissue comprises a dermis tissue or cellulite; wherein the at least one piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element is configured to form a thermal lesion in the tissue, wherein the thermal lesion is formed without focusing and without a lens, and wherein the cooling system is configured to cool the skin surface at the housing configured for acoustic coupling to the skin surface, wherein the control system is configured to operate the cooling system to control the cooling the skin surface.
15. The ultrasound probe of claim 14, further comprising a piezoelectric imaging element configured for imaging at a frequency range of 2 MHz to 25 MHz, wherein the piezoelectric imaging element and the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element are co-housed within the probe housing.

The ultrasound probe of any one of claims 14-15, wherein the probe is reusable, wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element delivers the ultrasound energy at a frequency between 2 MHz to 25 MHz, wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element is configured to deliver the ultrasound energy at a depth below the skin surface, wherein the thermal lesions tighten the tissue.
17. The ultrasound probe of any one of claims 14-16, further comprising a storage system for transducer usage history and calibration data, and further comprising an interface configured for connection to a control system, wherein the control system comprises a processor and a communication device, wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element is configured for connection to the control system.
18. The ultrasound probe of any one of claims 14-17, further comprising a temperature sensor.
19. The ultrasound probe of any one of claims 14-18, further comprising a storage system for transducer usage history and calibration, wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element is configured for delivery of the ultrasound energy at a frequency between 2 MHz to 25 MHz.
20. The use of the ultrasound probe of any one of claims 1-19 for cosmetically enhancing an appearance of skin.
21. The use of the ultrasound probe of any one of claims 1-19 for cosmetically enhancing an appearance of fat.
22. The use of the ultrasound probe of any one of claims 1-19 for cosmetically enhancing an appearance of cellulite.
23. The use of the ultrasound probe of any one of claims 1-19 for cosmetically enhancing an appearance of stretch marks.
24. A method of performing a cosmetic procedure on a subject using the ultrasound probe according to any one of claims 1-19, wherein said method comprises: placing the ultrasound probe on the skin surface; coupling the housing to the skin surface; delivering the ultrasound energy at a frequency between 2 MHz to 25 MHz to the tissue below the skin surface; and cooling the skin surface with the cooling system.
25. The method of claim 24, wherein the delivering of the ultrasound energy heats the tissue below the skin surface to a temperature of greater than 60 degrees Celsius.
26. The method of claim 24, wherein the tissue below the skin surface is epidermis tissue.
27. The method of claim 24, wherein the tissue below the skin surface is dermis tissue.
28. The method of claim 24, wherein the tissue below the skin surface is fat tissue.
29. The method of claim 24, wherein the tissue below the skin surface is muscle tissue.
30. The method of claim 24, wherein the tissue below the skin surface is gland tissue.
31. The method of claim 24, wherein the tissue below the skin surface is a blood vessel.
32. The method of claim 24, further comprising storing identification or usage history on an EEPROM.
33. The method of claim 24, further comprising placing an acoustic couple between the ultrasound probe housing and the skin surface.

A method of performing a cosmetic procedure on a subject using an ultrasound probe, wherein said method comprises: placing the ultrasound probe on a skin surface, wherein the ultrasound probe comprises: a probe housing configured for acoustic coupling to a skin surface, wherein the probe housing comprises at least one piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element and a cooling system, wherein the housing is connected via a cable with a connector to a control system, wherein the control system is configured to operate the at least one piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element at one or more energy levels, wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element is configured for delivery of ultrasound energy at a temperature greater than 60°C to treat at least a portion of a tissue, wherein the tissue comprises a dermis tissue, an epidermis tissue, or cellulite; wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy element is configured to form a thermal lesion in the tissue, wherein the thermal lesion is formed without focusing and without a lens, and wherein the cooling system is configured to cool the skin surface at the housing configured for acoustic coupling to the skin surface; coupling the housing to the skin surface; and delivering the ultrasound energy to the tissue below the skin surface; cooling the skin surface with the cooling system, wherein the control system is configured to operate the cooling system to control the cooling the skin surface.
35. The method of claim 34, wherein the delivering of the ultrasound energy has a frequency between 2 MHz to 25 MHz.
36. The method of claim 34, wherein the tissue is epidermis tissue.
37. The method of claim 34, wherein the tissue is dermis tissue.
38. The method of claim 34, wherein the tissue is fat tissue.
39. The method of claim 34, wherein the tissue further comprises muscle tissue.
40. The method of claim 34, wherein the tissue further comprises gland tissue.
