A Virtual Reality headset with two cameras to monitor the user's eyes, using corrective glasses, trial lenses and external buttons and/or apertures to control the internal computing device.
The present invention belongs to the field of information systems devices.
Virtual reality sets (sets) are a relatively new category of hardware. A "virtual reality set" is defined as any head-worn set/glasses/device/etc., of suitable hardware, which either: a) has a built-in screen or: b) is designed to accommodate a "computing device" such as a smartphone /tablet/etc which can serve as a display for the virtual reality experience, where "computing device" means any device that has a central processing unit (CPU) and a display and is suitable for use with the "virtual reality set" .
The computing device can be inserted into the virtual reality set - depending on the model - in two ways: a) either by sliding it from the side (figure 1-A), or b) by opening the front door (figure 1-B).
The virtual reality set has two converging observation lenses - one for each eye - through which the user looks at the screen. Virtual reality sets usually have a rotary knob on the top that is used to adjust the interfocal distance, and a rotary knob on the right and left that are used to adjust the focus, moving the screen either closer or further away from the eye. .
Virtual reality sets generally have some disadvantages: a) adjusting the focus by moving the screen forward or backward has the disadvantage of reducing the available field of view as the screen moves away from the eye. In many cases however this setting is not enough and/or cannot correct the problem at all, however it is used because the user cannot use their own corrective glasses because they cannot be fitted in the set. There is also no possibility to place test lenses in front of the set lenses, b) when the computing device is placed inside the set, the user does not have access to the buttons of the device, so he must open the set and/or remove the device from it to turn it off or on, c) most virtual reality sets do not have eye-tracking cameras, while in those that do, OL cameras are not placed in front of or near the optical centers of the set's lenses but peripherally. This does not give a satisfactory sense of what the eye is looking at and which depending on the use for which the set is intended can be a problem, d) when the set is connected via a USB cable to a computer there is not enough space for the USB plug of the computer device and may be deformed and/or damaged as well as the USB connector of the electronic device.
Described here is a virtual reality set that does not have these disadvantages, as shown in figures 2,3,4,5,6.
Figure 2 shows a mobile device placed in a virtual reality set. Corresponding to the buttons of the portable device (17,18) there may be in the virtual reality set external openings or mechanical external buttons (1,2,4,5) using / through which the user can access the buttons of computing device, without having to open the set or remove the device from it. Thus he can press the buttons of the internal device either a) through the corresponding external openings of the set with the help of some object or b) mechanically through the external buttons of the set and turn it off or start it. This makes the set easier to use.
Corresponding to the USB port of the portable device (19), the virtual reality set has openings (3,6). So the USB plug is not deformed / blocked when the portable device is placed inside the set.
At each attachment point, in front of the screen, corresponding to the geometric center of each hemisphere of the screen, centrally or up to 25° from it, is placed a small camera (7,8) which looks towards the corresponding eye. Each camera is held in place by brackets (10, 9) which in turn rest on the VR set (15, 16) or are mounted/rested on the screen. Alternatively, the cameras (13,14) may be mounted in corresponding positions on the main body of the virtual reality set via brackets (11,12) and each facing the respective eye. Cameras can operate in either the visible or infrared spectrum.
Figure 3-A shows the virtual reality set from the user's side while Figure 3-B shows at points 1 and 2 two notches / recesses, which allow the user's corrective glasses to be placed / inserted into the set.
Yes, the user can wear their corrective glasses - if they have them - at the same time as the virtual reality set.
Figure 4 at points 1 KOL 2 shows the corresponding notches/recesses, in the plastic base, which is contained in the sponge that comes into contact with the user's face.
Figure 5 shows the left notch (1) for the corrective glasses in the body of the virtual reality set and the sockets for the (at least two) trial lenses (2,3). The sockets are rotatable to adjust astigmatism.
Figure 6 shows the two notches (1,2) right KOL left, as they are from the user's side of the virtual reality set.
The improved virtual reality set described: 1) is easier to use because the user does not have to remove the mobile device each time to turn it off or start it, 2) has cameras located near or corresponding to the optical centers of the set's lenses , which can track the user's eyes 3) enables the user to have the mobile device - while it is placed inside the VR set - connected to a host computer via USB without the risk of damaging the mobile device's USB plug , 4) enables the user to wear their corrective glasses when using the virtual reality set and 5) allows the use of trial corrective lenses.
