A device for filling a container, such as the petrol tank of a motor vehicle, with liquid, includes a valve 3 connected to opening means 5, an opening 16 closed by the rising level of liquid to cause the valve 3 to close, means 13, 14 for latching the means 5 in a valve-open position, and an auxiliary valve 26 to close the opening 16 and hence the valve 3 if the device falls or is inadvertently displaced from its correct position during filling. When liquid is discharging from the nozzle 2 of the device, air is drawn through the opening 16 which communicates with the space above a spring- loaded diaphragm 22 by way of passages 18, 23, 19 and 20. Closure of the opening by the liquid or by movement of the valve 26, which is constituted by a loose ball, reduces the pressure above the diaphragm to displace a cam. 24 acting on the spindle 12 of the valve 3 through a lever 9.
