Abstract
996,634. Searchlights. P. E. DE S. COELHO. Feb. 5, 1963 [Feb. 23, 1962], No. 4715/63. Heading F4R. [Also in Division G2] Apparatus for improving the long range observation of an object especially through fog, mist and cloud, comprises a searchlight for projecting a light beam towards the object, means for causing the beam to be projected intermittently and a sighting device disposed adjacent and parallel to the searchlight having means for intermittently preventing light entering the sighting device. The searchlight 1, Fig. 1, comprises a light source 2, a condenser lens 3, a diaphragm 4 at the conjugate focus of the lens and an objective lens 6, the back focal point of which coincides with the image at the diaphragm 4. The sighting device has an eyepiece 10 and a fixed diaphragm 9. A disc 5 driven by a motor 21 has two series of apertures 11, 12, and 13, 14 cooperating with the diaphragms 4, 9 respectively as shown in Fig. 2. During rotation of the disc there are successive periods during which (1) there is emission but no visual reception, (2) there is neither emission nor reception and (3) there is reception but no emission. If the interval between emission and reception is #T, visual impressions will only be received which are derived from a distance L/2 where L is the distance covered by the light in the time #T. This distance can be varied by varying the speed of the motor 21 or by a small adjustment of the position of the diaphragm 9 concentrically of the shaft of the disc. If desired, the sighting device may be fitted with lenses.
